An antibody that could be effective in neutralising coronavirus has been found by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPMC).

Scientists isolated “the smallest biological molecule” that “completely and specifically neutralizes" SARS-CoV-2, which causes the novel coronavirus, according to a report released on Monday.

The antibody, which is 10 times smaller than a full-sized antibody, has been used to create a drug named Ab8 that researchers hope might be able to prevent and treat the virus.

Researchers reported that the drug has so far proven “highly effective in preventing and treating SARS-CoV-2 infection" in mice and hamsters.

The drug has also shown signs that it won’t have negative side-effects in people, as it does not bind to human cells, researchers said.

“Ab8 not only has potential as therapy for Covid-19, but it also could be used to keep people from getting SARS-CoV-2 infections,” said co-author John Mellors, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Pitt and UPMC. Xianglei Liu of Pitt is also co-lead author of the study.

“Antibodies of larger size have worked against other infectious diseases and have been well tolerated, giving us hope that it could be an effective treatment for patients with Covid-19 and for protection of those who have never had the infection and are not immune," Dr Mellors added.

Notably, researchers said that they are “thinking outside the box” in how the drug could be administered. The report suggested that alternative routes for administration may be possible, including inhalation or a spiky plaster-like patch.

“Its small size might allow it to be given as an inhaled drug or intradermally, rather than intravenously through an IV drip, like most monoclonal antibodies currently in development,” the report says.

During initial tests, even at the lowest dose, Ab8 decreased by 10-fold the amount of infectious virus in those mice compared to those who were untreated.

“The Covid-19 pandemic is a global challenge facing humanity, but biomedical science and human ingenuity are likely to overcome it,” said Dr Mellors, also Distinguished Professor of Medicine, who holds the Endowed Chair for Global Elimination of HIV and AIDS at UPMC.

“We hope that the antibodies we have discovered will contribute to that triumph.”
Someone needs a stronger dose of social distancing. More antibodies for that guy!

This is what both sides want here in the US. The right wants to ban anything considered unholy. The left wants social media censored for fake news.

This is what you would get. Crackpot woman spreading fake news or clear evidence of suppression of speech? Since the topic is heavily censored, nobody knows the real truth.

If she has evidence why hasn't she presented it? It's like Trump saying the virus will disappear or he'll release his taxes...don't talk, show me proof.

You can't really 100% prove something like this due to natural mutations, but she published her full paper and explains everything.

Not sure why some are calling her a nutjob or crackhead just because it goes against the current mainstream theory, several Western scientists have the same suspicions about the lab origin.

I wouldn't put it past the CCP but why would create or genetically modify a virus without a vaccine? I don't see it...

I think the origin is still questionable at this point. I never understood the rush to believe China and discount/censor everything else.

Wouldn't be the first time a bio lab had an accident, the lab also had severe safety deficiencies according to past tests.

The biggest crackpot of spreading fake news is the President himself. Nobody knows the real truth when he speaks. He is the biggest threat of lie spreading across social media, the press, and the people of our country.

This is being discussed in the D&D.. She didn't say it was made in a lab. She said it could've been made in a lab.

She has a "science" pre-print version of her paper published. That isn't censored. People can read up on it and form their own opinion. Here is an article about that paper.

Truth through rumors mills, twitter, and entertainment news - not reliable. "Science" paper - much more reliable.

I've been saying this for awhile. The CCP is authoritarian but they aren't stupid.

It makes no sense at all that they would create COVID-19, a virus that is a terrible bio-weapon, release it deliberately in a city in the center of the PRC that doesn't have as much international travel as coastal cities, kill several of their own people, greatly harm their own economy, and greatly harm their own global prestige all for the possibility that the US does a bad job dealing with it and it get's Trump out of office.
