What is that? Some sort of school choice charter school program with an Orwellian name?

    It's about this.

Trump announces commission to further 'patriotic education'

President Trump on Thursday described America’s heritage and history as under assault from the left, decrying anti-racism teachings and "cancel culture" while announcing plans for a new commission to promote "patriotic education" in U.S. schools.

In a speech delivered in somber tones at the National Archives Museum, Trump painted a dramatic and dark portrait of an effort by liberals to “indoctrinate” America’s children and repress American values, culture and faith.

“Whether it is the mob on the street or the cancel culture in the boardroom, the goal all is the same — to silence dissent, to scare you out of speaking the truth, and to bully Americans into abandonment of their values, their heritage and their very way of life,” Trump said in the speech at the White House Conference on American History.

“We are here today to declare that we will never submit to tyranny. We will reclaim our history, and our country, for citizens of every race, color, religion and creed,” he said.

Trump announced plans to sign a new executive order establishing a national commission to promote “patriotic education” in American schools, which he said would be called the 1776 Commission, a nod to his criticism of the 1619 Project throughout the speech.

The commission will be tasked with celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the country’s founding and with encouraging educators to “teach our children about the miracle of American history.”

In his remarks, Trump took particular aim at “critical race theory,” a methodology that argues racism and racial inequality are a result of systemic power structures. Trump called it a “Marxist doctrine” and said teaching it to children amounts to “a form of child abuse in the truest sense of the word.”

The president similarly rebuked the 1619 Project, an ongoing enterprise developed by The New York Times Magazine last year with the stated goal of “aim[ing] to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.” Both, he said, are “ideological poison that, if not removed, will dissolve the civic bonds that tie us together.”

The president and some of his top aides have rejected the idea that there is systemic racism in the United States in the face of nationwide demonstrations in response to multiple police killings of Black people.

“We embrace the vision of Martin Luther King where children are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. The left is attempting to destroy that beautiful vision and divide Americans by race in the service of political power,” Trump said Thursday.

“By viewing every issue in the lens of race they want to impose a new segregation, and we must not allow that to happen,” he continued.

Trump delivered the remarks on Constitution Day, marking the 233rd anniversary of the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. He spoke from a stage in front of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Thursday’s speech aligned with efforts from Trump and his campaign to appeal to white voters by depicting protests that started Memorial Day weekend after the police killing of George Floyd as radical attempts to characterize the country as racist and demean its history.

While the protests sparked calls for policing reform and solutions to address racial inequality, the president focused on more unruly aspects such as the efforts by some demonstrators to topple statues of Confederate leaders and other controversial figures, including Christopher Columbus and former President Andrew Jackson.

This is textbook Orwellian. Magically hand wave the notion that being critical of our country's faults is "propaganda" while sugarcoating it is "telling it like it is".

I made this comment in a debate with @Os Trigonum a few weeks ago that the Trump Administration and the movement of Trumpism is a dangerous anti-intellectual movement. While there is plenty to criticize regarding Leftist thought in education and I've certainly criticized things Political Correctness and Cancel Culture that doesn't mean that we should accept a curriculum called "Patriotic Education". The way Trump describes it's a reactionary curriculum to the 1619 Project but also smacks the fascistic "Moral Philosophy" that Heinlein created in Starship Troopers.

While there is a lot to criticize and debate in Critical Race Theory Trump is basically calling for cancelling it and lumping it into a general "Marxist" view that many Conservative intellectuals have railed against. The problem is that while Critical Race Theory has its own issues the critique of it as just part of "Marxist" thought is a McCarthy like critique that rather than consider it substantively just tags it with a scarlet letter label. It is inline with other critiques of Left that we see out of Trump and his movement that they aren't actually using critical thought.

I would say that the Trumpist movement is actually anti-critical thought and is one reason why it so riddled with conspiracy theories of the QAanon type. Where even a little critical thought would show how extremely improbably such theories are. The problem when outlets and individuals who consider themselves to be literate intellectuals ally themselves or defend Trumpism because they feel that Leftist thought is overwhelming academia is that they are essentially selling themselves out to a movement that is against much of what they stand for. For people who claim to follow Edmund Burke to put themselves at the service of a Populist who by his words is not going to be like any other President before him is a betrayal of Burke.

Part of the Democrat platform is to... rip down Mt Rushmore, and overturn the American Revolution. But yea, Biden is crazy because he listed Harris first...

Every move Trump makes worries me because I feel he has a hidden agenda. It's Red States Blue States with everything now. Its radical leftists not Democrats. What's next? American bombers dropping propaganda pamphlets into neighborhoods? Next, a new salute with MAGA shouting Hail Trump, our chosen one! (Boy he would love that!) The rising of a dictator who rules forever?

Leftists want to overthrow the American revolution...

Remember kids, Trump doesn't like spreading panic. He wants to make sure everyone is calm.

Education and history is the best tool to brainwash any population.

But no need to be alarmed. It takes time to write the history you want and Trump can do nothing if he loses the elections.

I think Americans should be more proud of their country, it is an amazing country. The problem is that everyone seems to see things in absolutes. Be proud of the good things and accept the weaknesses and work on them.

The rest of the world listens to American news and media reports and thinks that the USA is a third world **** hole, when it isn’t, but America always airs her dirty laundry... it is how America fixes its problems, out in the open.

A lot of problems to fix, but some liberals act as if the country is the worst place on the planet... likewise, the conservatives gloss over the reality of history... the USA does not need an infomercial on “positive” US history, and that isn’t what most Americans want either.
