Yeah I worry about that and I also wonder how long before the bags are under the eyes, he is miserable and we are losing games 90-86 with Harden being doubled and shooting 30% from the floor scoring 25 points a game. Also, if Jeff brings his brother along, is that too much Van Gundy?
It would be a repeat of the McHale and Dantoni era of zero accountability of star players. Ty Lue was an assistant coach to LeBron. He would be an assistant coach to Harden also as both those guys have similar pull on their respective franchises. JVG on the other hand would clash with Harden at the opposite spectrum.
I lived in Cleveland from 2013-2017 and followed the Cavs a bit - i really dont get the love for Ty Lue. He coached a Lebron lead Cavs in a weak East. Any team in the East with Lebron was going to the Finals. It was more so Lebron's and Kyrie's will than Ty's coaching that won them them championship. The next 2 years after winning the championship, the Cavs were 1-8 against GSW in the finals. GSW will be back at full strength next year, have the 2nd pick that can be used or traded away, plus you gotta deal with the Lakers and Clippers again. Sure you can "consider" Ty Lue, but for him to be your "culture changer" and get your team to beat GSW, LAL, LAC - he is not the guy.
I don't think SVG would leave his announcing gig to be an assistant, even under his brother. I also don't think JVG eschews modern offense so I wouldn't worry about that crappy offense again, but I don't know if it could be good ENOUGH under him. If you are telling me JVG is bringing Finch or Gentry or some other offensive guy with him as a coordinator great. But also, who is defensive coordinator for him? Does JVG know modern defensive principles? Does he believe in our switching scheme? Does he have a better option? The grind it out, fewer possessions thing doesn't work anymore.
The lack of concern to spend money on assistants concerns me. I agree with you, if the Rockets were to add JVG then they have to spend money on assistants.
@The Cat mentioned the possibility (and he was just speculating) that they might save money on HC so they could afford better assistants. It's just laughable that this is the reality. Poverty franchise.
Sadly I think this is the case. They will interview coaches and make low ball offers and see who takes it... which means either a desperate older coach or an inexperienced assistant. TF will take on an extra $30,000,000 on Westbrook’s contract but they will not offer an extra 4-5 million spread out over all their assistants. Just ignorant.
Why not let the fans choose. We would do a much better job than the organization. This thread should have a poll.
Exactly. Media is pushing the narrative so hard on him up to being some type of coaching genius with finals experience when everyone knows he was just lbj's assistant while in Cleveland.
He took on that extra salary but then requested to make payments on layaway...(ie renegotiated up front payments of salary)
Good luck with Harden ignoring JVG and JVG throwing fits..... all depends on their early record. If it's another slow start, this could get ugly. Maybe JVG learned to relax during his time on television. It also depends how much time Tilman can give JVG with Harden's prime years on the clock.
Tilman would probably mention his illness publicly as a reason he's not sure if he wants to coach anymore after about a month. Blatt can go in on the class action against him for discrimination with MDA and his wife Laurel, if MDA can't get another HC gig this offseason.
