Sam Cassell’s Early Encounter with Rockets’ Russell Westbrook

We used to go to UCLA in the summers. I’m in there one day working him over, I’m just pump-faking and everything. And he just has so much energy. One time Kevin Garnett came over to UCLA and I said, ‘You know that kid, Russell?’ And KG said ‘Who’s that?’ I said, ‘the kid who’s been dunking, running all fast with the ball. He’s gonna be good, man’ .”

After Cassell worked him in their first meeting, he recalls how eager Westbrook was for their rematch. He continued: “We got out of the car and walked to the arena and Russell was at that first door, waiting on me, bouncing the ball and he said, ‘I’m glad you made it. I don’t believe with how slow you are, you’re getting your shot off on me like that.”

Sam then explains to Rivers that he just had more experience and craftiness than Russ at the time, which is why he was able to school the young gun.

Honestly Russell Westbrook has been catered to enough already. The Rockets made a fundamental change to their offense and defense just to accommodate Westbrook, while the Rockets best player just had to modify his game.

Either Westbrook can adapt and actually play like he is part of a professional NBA team or his ass can sit on the bench and watch someone else play that knows how to do simple things like switch on defense and not turn the ball over by running into the teeth of a double team.

Westbrook was a ******* clown in the playoffs being consistently out played by Alex Caruso and an ancient Rajon Rondo. He should be embarrassed but is likely too big a fool to realize it. Even my 7 year old knows to rotate defensively and to exploit a mismatch.

You can show a horse how to be a pig, but I doubt it'll ever taste like bacon.
Maybe I said that wrong, but you get the picture ...

In the back of my mind, I keep praying this is what happened because that was painful to watch.

    I'm sold.
Would rather see a fresh face like Cassell with everything to prove rather than a crusty JVG.

Nobody can change westbrick. What happened to his BFF can make him better. What happened to his BFF can make harden’s life easier. All pure nonsense

If Sam can get Russ to be the mid range king then we are in good shape.

This dude as rookie helped us to the promise land

Russell Westbrook would benefit the ROCKETS. By playing somewhere else.

I suggested that Russ needs to go and watch films and practice with a good Point coach this offseason. He has to be much better with his decision making. Nook suggested Billups as a candidate coach and I like it. Having said that if Maurice cheeks who is arguably one of the best points of all time couldn’t get through to Russ not sure if anyone can

WB needs to somehow go back to Jan-Feb WB. If he can't finish at the rim, he's essentially useless.

True. Perhaps his quad injury had something to do with this.

Cassell is a better PG than Billups
    @Rocket River

He was #2 in the league in assists behind Jason Kidd one year while averaging more points and shooting a better percentage

Did Harden and Tilman not realize what type of player WB was? Did they not know how OKC played with WB?

Maybe predictability too. The quad injury didn't help.but they can form a wall against Giannis, teams can certainly jam the paint to stop WB

That's an issue with our post season offense in general.

Harden has been catered to also hence our very stagnant offense in tight games in the playoffs in the 4rh quarter. Our offensive system forces us to be like the Bucks where we can't win unless we have a 10+ pt lead heading into the 4th.

Too many people here just flat out deny this is a problem even respectable posters. I just don't get it. When you watch this team year in and year out it's very obvious our stagnant predictable offense carries us through regular seasons where teams aren't going to put all their effort in scheming for your specific team because they play a new team ever other night but doesn't work in right game situations in the playoffs in a 7 game series where teams have ample amount of time to memorize a predictable offenses' I'm schemes and passing angles.
