Yep, wifey is Swedish and we had been talking of moving here for years but the timing never made sense. When all of this crap started happening, we could see the writing on the wall (COVID, election, etc.) and knew we didn’t want to weather the storm if we didn’t have to do so. Our kids (7 and 5) are the perfect age to really learn the language and culture so that they get a good mix of Swedish and American. My older daughter (19) came with us and is starting college in Austria next week so we are also closer to her which has worked out really, really well. It gives us time to see how everything plays out over there and I finally get to really experience living somewhere else. My business has taken a hit from all of the COVID mess so I’m winding it down and want to take the rest of the year to just sit still in the quiet and recharge my batteries. I’ll start looking for a job here after the holidays and go from there. I’m not worried about it since we have a decent nut saved and my skills translate anywhere. We moved from OC, CA not long ago and the difference is so drastic. I keep telling people that it was like being in a dysfunctional relationship where you know it was bad but you didn’t realize how bad it was until you got out. The quiet and calm has been deafening. yeah the most curious part is trump sounds so calm and matter of fact juxtaposed against the mixed message we are getting from repugs even to this day! trump knew it was deadly, he knew it was 5%vs 1% flu, airborne and yet these facts are still not accepted today by repugs. they cant get their talking points in line. as usual we are getting the exact kind of message from repugs that we have come to expect and that is absolute disaster. talk about anarchy that is the repug approach here on this virus.
Lol, thanks, I employ many people in Sweden and almost certainly know the labor landscape better than you do. I'm well aware of the social benefits that are there, as I frequently hire and even fire people there. Your premise is that sick people don't go to work, therefore you don't need a lockdown in Sweden, but you do in the US? Are you aware that the workplace is not the most common place for the virus to spread? I'd love to hear your justification of how the lockdown "worked" in the US!
Sweden's certainly done much better than the US but it's done much worse than it's neighbors Finland, Norway and Denmark which are demographically very similar and also have many of the same social programs. At the same time Sweden's economy hasn't gotten the same benefit. At the moment Sweden seems to have gotten it under control but as we should all know there are many up and downs with this disease. Regarding a US lockdown, the US never had a national lockdown and with open state borders it's impossible to stop the spread from state to state. That said since the initial surge in general states that have had more restrictions have done better than states that have been more open on a per capita basis.

WTF does hiring and firing people in Sweden have to do with anything? Unlike the US, the workforce here doesn’t rely on their employer to provide healthcare or the majority of their social benefits because they are provided and managed by the state. So no, just because you’ve worked with some people from Sweden doesn’t make you some expert. I’m not claiming to be either but I’ve been married to a Swedish citizen for 15 years, hold a permanent residency visa, have all of our family here, and we personally live here now. I guarantee you that my experience here far exceeds yours as is evidenced by your ridiculous and ignorant takes about Sweden. It’s so outlandishly stupid that It defies logic. 200,000 people are dead in the US and it is estimated to double by the end of the year. The US coronavirus response hasn’t worked and I surely didn’t say that it did. We literally moved across the world because we feel that the US is failing on multiple fronts and the reason that it is like that is due to morons like you supporting morons like Trump. Sweden’s policies are the exact opposite of what you subscribe to and these policies have been paramount to their success and for you to use them to substantiate your claims is hypocritical and an embarrassment.
