    Strict New Diversity Requirements Take Full Effect In 2024
    Article (no pay wall)

    "For best picture nomination only.

    * Having at least one Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African American, Indigenous/Native American/Alaskan Native, Middle Eastern/North African, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander or unspecified other underrepresented race or ethnicity as a “lead or significant supporting actor”

    * Additionally, employing women, LGBTQ+, members of a racial or ethnic group, and people with cognitive or physical disabilities or who are deaf or hard of hearing might be required for at least 30% of actors in secondary and more minor roles;

    * Having a storyline centered on an underrepresented group;

    * hiring creative leadership and department heads;

    * maintaining least 30% crew composition; paid internships; and representation in marketing and distribution also are potential areas in order to be a Best Picture contender.

    Producers don’t have to meet all of the requirements of the new doctrine, just half."

    I was hoping they were referring to genres of movies. The Academy has a such a narrow view of what is deemed "best picture" material that we have an entire industry of Oscar bait. It's very easy to mimic the qualities of a tradional best picture film.

    Can't say I care what the Oscars or Academy has done in the past , present or future. They add nothing to any product.

    No, I don't need them to tell me what a good movie is. But it's nice when good smaller movies get recognition, recognition = money, money = more chances of good movies being made.

    Yes period pieces may have issues. 1917 would have had problems getting nominated last year. It was a good flick. While I personally enjoyed Parasite a bit more, I don't think audience like films to get disqualified.

    Feels like it's one of those things where the studios just move too slowly to improve themselves, so Oscars has to play a stern parent. Oscar may expect backlash for being too 'woke'.

    I don't care about the Oscars, but isn't this going to likely cause some poor quality movies/ acting roles to be forced into a nomination when there is an off year for movies meeting all the requirements?

    Agree to some extent. A sticker on the blu ray disc maybe. :D

    Means less to us, than in the industry itself. Can help a nominated actor/actress get future work. John Smith becomes Oscar nominated actor; John Smith.

    All movies need to meet the requirements or they shouldn't be funded.

    I think studios have a good idea whether or not a movie has a shot at a nomination before they start production, and they’re going to insist that the requirements are met. Movie ideas that won’t work under the rules will never get off the ground. I’m not some anti-diversity jerk, but I don’t like anything that takes power away from artists in any way. They can bypass the actor rule if they fulfill production/crew standards, but there will be pressure not to lean on that.

    Hollywood has some ****ed up gatekeepers. Maybe this is nudging them to practice more of what they're preaching.

    I'm not sure how this directly restricts freedom when most people already admit how awful studios can be.

    It seems that certain movies are going to have unnecessary characters/ storyline shoehorned in to meet these requirements -- there should be a more organic way to increase diversity a checklist of rules and benchmarks is odd.

    Some film productions have things like color blind casting. A role where maybe doesn't matter the gender or race. If not for color blind; lot of times these parts defaults to caucasian males. Could be unconscious bias by the casting director. Darker skinned actresses, older female also have tougher times in Hollywood in general. Octavia Spencer said after she won an oscar for the Help, was still tough getting good scripts and opportunities.

    The other thing is academy voting body skews older white males. Lot of the members don't work in the industry anymore, but still has vote. They'd vote in categories for movies that they haven't seen, but pick them because leads are recognizable. In Oscar campaigns. guys like Weinstein were said to visit nursing homes to get votes.
