I can only answer why I might go to a protest, and why I might decide to take it the next step & do damage. I would go to protest to get national media attention to a topic that moves the needle nationally on an issue. I think at least at first, the George Floyd protests did alot. When Rodger Freaking Godell says "Black Lives Matter" on live TV, I think we can all agree something has changed. Why would I take it a step further ?? (well I dont THINK I would but...) I think I would channel my inner 16 year old that listened to Rage Against the Machine and take the EMOTIONAL decision to let out my frustration by causing some form of damage. Maybe I'd walk by an Amazon store, and think that "Man... Jeff Bezos has the power to do something and has done nothing for the people, and has sold his soul" and throw a rock at the window of that Amazon store. That might make me feel better in the moment, but in reality I'm not hurting Jeff Bezos. Amazon has insurance, and in the end the city Probably pays for the damage which ultimately comes from tax payers. So if you are interested in the "why"... that's the best I can do to explain. I don't think ANYONE who is settled down, and using logic thinks looting and property damage is helpful... It's only helpful for the Authoritarian Leaders and their supporters WHO WANT THE LOOTING to use as an excuse to grab more and more power just like the authoritarian playbook prescribes. In any situation you have to ask yourself "Who Benefits?" Who do you think benefits from people life yourself, or maybe even my Neighbor thinking that looting and riots are getting soooo bad that they have to either take action themselves or support a police state crackdown? Who Benefits in you being that scared of something that honestly.... is a natural human nature thing which I describe above???
I condemn all forms of political violence and white nationalism so I'm not sure why you feel like tagging me. Also I don't complain that Antifa are the worst of them. You continue to make things up to have someone to argue with. It's sad. You don't have a life I take it. The proud boys are moron thugs and need to get jobs, as do the Antifa people. I agree that there are similar grievances among Trump supporters as with those on the Left and Trump deliberately plays to those. The differences though are profound and not just to that one has a centralized leadership with a loyal following. While big parts of Trump's base are poor and disenfranchised who have gotten a raw deal in our economy while they might blame moneyed elites like the Left the difference is that their approach is aspirational while the Left's view is ecumenical. That is that Trump is pushing an idea that you've been screwed by those wealthy fat cats and Hollywood liberals so he's going help you screw them back so that you can be the wealthy fat can and take over culture again. The MAGA idea is an idea where once Judeo Christianity and essentially an 18th Century European mores dominated and that Trump will return us to that. Further the villains in this narrative aren't just wealthy fat cats but also immigrants and non-white Americans who are seen as ungrateful and angry. The Leftist view isn't to look to an idealized and culturally narrow past where one group dominated but to a nebulous future of cultural and racial diversity but economic parity. Where the are no fat cats or poor cats. The villains aren't just wealthy fat cats but also racists and culturally backwards people who have oppressed groups out of bigotry. The problem is that the Left looks to many of Trump's base as those villains.
I will say again as someone who did have to protect my neighborhood from the chaos and destruction that anyone who wants to get in their truck with guns and flags and come here are not welcome.

This is the issue with modern racism. Having a black friend means you aren't racist. Not saying the word "******" means you aren't a racist. Yet have a 5 minute conversation with you or your friend about black poverty where I bring up the fact that the median white household has 1000% of the wealth of a median black household, your excuse for that the massive disparity is "lazy culture" in the back community rather than 300+ years of oppression. I've noticed this trend with so many "I'm not a racist I have a black friend" people.
