I'm aware that every single one of those groups of people got spat on for what they did, but getting flack/pushback does not automatically mean you're in the right. I'm also aware that some people who have been part of historically justified and lionized protests have come out in support of the NBA, etc, but that doesn't really amount to much as those people are not the arbiters of what is right/wrong. That being said, not all activism is the same (action taken, underlying causes, expressed meaning, etc), and I don't think that the activism we've seen since George Floyd, especially as it relates to the NBA, is going to look great in retrospect.
Not your money you're lighting on fire so easy to say. There is no magic "100% only racist NBA watchers (lol what a demographic that would be) go poof" button when it comes to this stuff. You're going to have some collateral damage along the way.
People will always watch their sports. BLM is so benign that it really only affects an older demographic. Others will complain for a season or two about the “political messaging” but they’ll always be back to watch
It's mostly going to be racists that are offended. We live in a time were racists are concious enough to read society to know they would immediately lose the plot if they use terms like "******". I've been around enough of these type of people to know the moment after they say "I like black people and have black friends and don't hold racists thoughts" they follow it up with racial tropes such as welfare queens and black culture for the modern predicament of African Americans such as having a 100 grand gap in median household wealth compared to the median white family. They refuse to admit that 300 years of oppressing has a role to play and will make statements such as "slavery was over a century ago" while completely ignoring eras such as Jim Crow. I'm confident more than 90% of people who are offended by the NBA being activists for Black lives hold these sentiments. Too many people in this country believe racism is solved because the word "******" is socially shunned.
I don't see any dilemma in NBA players publicly demonstrating according to legitimate political concerns, when it's not influencing the actual games. OK, a segment of viewers are turned off because they don't agree with the politics they are expressing. That's a shame for those lost viewers, but it doesn't really impact my enjoyment of the product.
That's a gamble I'm glad I don't have to take. The data is probably really fuzzy about it. All I know is that it's probably an executive's worst nightmare to be putting out a product that fewer and fewer people are consuming.
One man's legitimate political concern is another man's load of b.s. is another man's intrusion of politics into the place he goes to escape politics. Can you elaborate on what you mean by this? Or give an example? I like basketball, as such I want the NBA to be more popular. Joe Blow's enjoyment of it in the immediate sense isn't front of mind, but the aggregate result does matter if you care about the future of the sport/league.
The problem isn't so much who you offend, but rather who you bore or annoy. It's a gamble to think what the NBA is doing is simply vaporizing all the pure racists from its viewership (whom obviously barely exist) and not turning off droves of other people who don't really want to get beat over the head with social activism when they are trying to unwind and be entertained.
I meant it doesn't appear to effect how the game itself is played. If the popularity diminishes to such an extent that quality of the game itself is somehow impacted, that would be more of a concern for me. But I don't think losing, say, 10% of the fans (I'm assuming the fanbase skews young and liberal) is going to have that effect.
There is only 30 of these teams with Powell becoming Oprah everyone will be getting a billion so I don't think the owner need to worry about losing money.
I care about the future of the country more. Do you want to see my violin I'll play for those poor executives?
Unless they are celebrities, athletes, or rich ones that support his campaign, bring in ratings, and put money in his pocket. The rest serve him no purpose.
I'm say what should have been said along time ago Trump STFU you idiot things are the way they are because of people like you that keep up the hateful speaking if you had a brain by no you would have gotten it its not about the flag dumb dumb it's about treatment of other that are not white and the continuous injustices that have befallen them .
