Getting blown by CP3's old ass was an embarrassment. OKC was hunting for him in every single possession. I have seen enough. He has no business playing in game 7. HOUSE is better than him on both ends of the court!
Covington at his best is a B-grade Trevor Ariza. Morey got fleeced in that trade - giving up a pick as well as the better player was shameful
I usually hate these reactionary threads but this was embarrassing. This guy was brought in to be our premier defender, and the thunder were hunting him on switches. They wanted to go against Covington. That just shouldn't happen.
Not one person on this team can defend one on one on the perimeter. If they magically get by OKC game 7 LBJ will have an absolute field day.
you're right he isn't good. He's actually GREAT. But GREAT OFFENSE will always beat great defense. that's what cp3 did. he refused to lose and took the game in his own hands. people think its bad defense when a player automatically scores. nah
Covington doesn't know how to defend the perimeter well, he's actually quite lazy in that respect. He's a awesome deflector and help defender, but he doesn't move his feet and is below average laterally to stop his men. Ariza was quite flat footed too, but I think he puts in more effort to stay in front. Covington has the terrible habit that plagues Harden which is giving up the drive and try a swipe after. That's lazy defense
This is all true but why did they want Covington? Houston was switching everything and putting up no resistance. So OKC got to pick whatever defender they wanted. It's not just about CP scoring. When Houston switches everything without resistance that means Chris Paul gets to pick any of Houstons 5 defenders to guard him, and he chose Covington over and over. Why is that?
Covington has always been a bad on ball defender and always been a good help defender. At least he pays attention off ball, unlike Westbrook. Rockets need to come up with a plan when Thunder iso hunt Covington. Pre-switch, go under, show and rotate, hard trap, something. At least there's a day to plan because MDA doesn't adjust during the games.
they? it was cp3 only. when players get into a rhythm against someone you just constantly go to that matchup. he hit some tough shots on him and just got in that zone. Yes houston switches everything. that's how opps get the matchups they want. it's one of the downfalls
He's good at deflections, little re-directs and stuff like that but seems to get into foul trouble a lot.
It's Rockets game plan, MDA gave his green light on steals and blocks to set a straight path to the hoop for Westbrick. If Roco actually focused on 1 on 1 D and perimeter fundamentals, he would be better at it, true words spoken.
I guess that’s one way to look at it. It just sucks that anyone can look at our five guys and think their easiest matchup is Covington. He was brought in to be our best defender so from a fans POV (mine) it just pisses me off.
i mean go back and look at the shots cp3 took. absolutely tough. especially step back 3 over and outstretched RoCo No such thing as better defense than this. You just tip your hat
i dont think covington is bad, but clearly cp3 has his number. He knows that he can get by him, so thats why he hunts for him. He is too big and slow to bother cp3 handles and lateral movements. Covington will look a lot better against wings, like kwahi , george, lebron, etc, wich are more the type of guys he is built to defend.
Covington is a good on-ball defender. It's just that he's an even better help defender and a defensive orchestrator. You pick to bring him onto the ball so he can't QB the defense and can't be the pass stealer, shot blocker, or rebounder.
