Yes. We actually stayed here and ended up getting very little wind and rain. We lost power for for a bit, but had no damage to anything. We were very lucky. From past experience I feel for the people in La. Thanks for checking on us.
Hey Astros, the league is still not going to like you anyways. They should sit out the next game in the name of domestic violence next.
There's no doubt that not all DV gets framed in proper context. Men's kindliness gets abused so often it's a common joke among women. You're old enough to know this.
After the postponement, a friend of mine messaged me saying the season was over for him. So far I have refrained from sending him this: "so...two years of cheating was ok, but a 1 day protest of racial injustice isn't?
I have no issue with protest but this piggybacked off of the NBA. Boycotting a justified shooting! Thats A ok too! Lets just not pretend this is all about “injustice”!
lots of new members coming out of the woodwork to tell us how unmoved they are about athlete protests and how they don't have any impact at all and how they barely even noticed. It's a real indifference pissing contest.
Yeah...it should be argued that Blake would have been safer had he been carrying an AK-47 towards police officers during a protest/riot rather than walking away form them. Because people that do that are allowed to just stroll on by as I understand things.
Only a “new member because I rarely post! Not interested in pissing contests! Not really my thing. I also dont like to lump everything that happens. To a person of color. Under the racial injustice umbrella! You know like the NBA boycotting after the Mr. Blake shooting! Its an emotional response to a situation that didnt even have clarity yet! Ill still watch sports but i dont view this stuff. As anything more than putting on a show!
Yeah, what a solid retort! If he had an AK-47 it would just be one more illegal activity he was involved in!
All I will say is the world is changing... and as I told a close friend, you evolve with it or you can be miserable and left behind.
I posted this on my Facebook in late July: Sports have never been a true escape from a real world but has been active player in shaping society. Politics and sports have always been intertwined. The question is whether this medium can advance or hinder humanity. The 1936 Olympics were intended by Nazi Germany to glorify the products of its ideology, but that message was undermined by the political statement made by the victories of Jesse Owens. For decades, major league baseball franchises implicitly barred the entrance of minority players, which re-enforced the social status quo. The debut of Jackie Robinson was not a decision based on simply improving the Brooklyn Dodgers but was also a political statement. South Africa made the immoral political stand to apply apartheid to athletics, and for that, the International Olympic Committee made the strong statement by barring their participation starting in 1964. Yet, under Nelson Mandela, the integration of its rugby team marked a moment of national healing. International tension between El Salvador and Honduras spilled over onto a soccer match and riot that followed. This even led to military armed conflict in 1969. Meanwhile in the boxing ring, Muhammed Ali's career was largely shaped by his activism including on issues that Americans still cannot find consensus today. The Battle of the Sexes between Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs was a demonstration on the tennis court that men and women can compete against each. Throughout the 1980s, sports were used as a means for Cold War rivals to demonstrate their superiority when allowed to actually compete as Olympic boycotts happened in Moscow and Los Angeles. At the 1990 FIBA World Championship, Vlade Divac publicly seized a fan's Croatian flag when Yugoslavia's twilight was fast approaching. Years before Kaepernick, Denver Nugget Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the national anthem to express his views that the flag symbolized tyranny and oppression. He eventually agreed to stand to pray during the playing of the anthem. Fast forward years later to Tim Tebow, who despite mockery and criticism, continued to wear eye black and engaged in actions that expressed his faith. During this time, baseball accepted Cuban defectors that desired a better life and freedom. Activism by coaches and players led to the ouster of Donald Sterling as Los Angeles Clippers owner in 2014 due to his vile attitudes towards others. Athletes can, of course, be in the wrong side of the moral equation as Lebron James criticized Daryl Morey in his advocacy for civil liberties in Hong Kong. Outside of these high profile examples, sports still have a role to play in a community -- either bringing it together in victory or tearing it apart during a scandal. The role sports takes in our society today, and whether it is the correct path, has yet to be determined.
The game didnt happen! I also didnt bring up the protesting! I can understand not wanting to engage further!
I will completely engage further in the D&D section. This thread is for the Astros and As series talk, not just tonight's postponed game.
