Portland was pretty peaceful until the original BLM protesters mostly left and the homeless, Crips, and grifters moved in. Our office right downtown only had the lobby broken up by the protesters...just broken glass and a couple small fires at first. A janitor trying to clean up was hit by a rock, but he was OK. About two weeks into it though is when the gang members started bringing in the drugs and guns. After a couple people were shot is when they locked it all down.

The US is an outstanding outlier in police involved killings. So we know that they are ways to detain non-complaint ppl. All defund the police means is having budge priorities like the suburbs have. Schooling, social services > police.

Not exactly....the question should maybe be why not just comply instead of putting it on the police to defend themselves against noncompliance ? We already have a highly charged atmosphere as involves police being cussed at, spit on, things thrown at them...forcing them in what has been a hostile environment, to make split second decisions. Defunding has meant slashing the police budget by as much as half....now, you REALLY believe having less policeman available is the answer ? I have seen police picking people off roofs of houses during weather catastrophies, saving a baby not breathing and many more.
