If he shoots 45% from midrange(which is elite) that’s only 0.90 pp

not to mention shrinks the court.

 

I think this is the most important point. The defense assumes James won’t be driving because Dort will be stopping it. So they take away that option. Then they just load up on everything else.

 

Actually not taking any shot attempts from a large part of the half court allows defenses to hedge their bets.

Hence why we have one of the most predictive offenses in the league where it's easy for teams to adjust in a 7 game series.

Also, when you have a lead, you want a higher percentage shot to decrease the variance and keep the other team from making a run. Just because the stats say one thing over the course of 82 games doesn't mean you don't need to be able to adjust to 1) what the other team is doing, 2) how well you are shooting the 3 in a given stretch of the game (even if those numbers even out the next game it doesn't matter or have any impact on the game you're currently playing, 3) time and score, etc.

 

The numbers say we are 2-2 in this series. We shot almost 40% from 3 the last game. Sometimes you just need a bucket.
