"Regardless of whether the human or machine wins the final dogfight, the AlphaDogfight Trials is all about increasing trust in AI," Col. Dan "Animal" Javorsek, the program manager, said in a release earlier this month. "If the champion AI earns the respect of an F-16 pilot, we'll have come one step closer to achieving effective human-machine teaming in air combat, which is the goal of the ACE program."

I know we're going to get there eventually, but this is basically stating that we're one step away from arming these things. That's scary to think about.

    I remember that movie:

This was inevitable. Humans reaction time is too limited and humans aren't really designed to handle hi-G turns. Requisite:
I for one welcome our new Robot Overlords
    Also
    We had a good run..

Yep very scary. This is basically like having the pilots respect there replacements.

We're already well down the road to a post human world. It might not be a Terminator future but it could be a Wall-E future where humans are so dependent on AI and machines that we lose the ability and will to have independent initiative.

They should start with something that already causes a lot of unnecessary/accidental harm. Replace police with robots first. You cant do any worse than what it already is. Lulz.

Is the pilot going to have to think in Russian?

But seriously, this was inevitable given that classic dogfights do not exist anymore (I believe that air-to-air missiles have an effective range of something like 30-90 miles).

I saw a documentary about the history of aerial combat recently that talked about that. In 1960's the US military felt that way and for awhile fighter planes of the Vietnam era weren't actually designed for dogfights and didn't carry guns but just missiles. While the US had air superiority in Vietnam there were several US planes that were shot down in dogfights by Russian MiGs the NVA was using because the US planes didn't have guns once they were out of missiles or in a tight dogfight where missiles couldn't be used they were essentially helpless.

After that the military went back to equipping planes with guns for dogfights and also teaching dogfighting techniques.

Not a good movie, but loved it as a kid because the plane looked badass.

humans are ruining the planet, except for a few smart ones.

it's time for the machines to take over.
