Louisiana Supreme Court upholds Black man's life sentence for stealing hedge clippers more than 20 y

Louisiana justice system is extremely bad. A lot of prisoners are used in what were former slave roles for government officials and the rich. They try to keep as many blacks in prison as possible.

 

California used to have a three strikes law that followed the same rationale.

Probably why bleeding hearts want to stress reform rather than an endless cycle of dealing with the prison system.

If you want to steal, steal BIG while wearing a suit. The POTUS might pardon you if you claim the media gave you a bad rap.

That is when you know you've "made it."

 

Will Trump pardon him?

 

Considering the color of the man’s skin, we know the answer to that question is no.

 

But.......he could do it to try and gain more votes from the people he could care less about.

You all know I despise Trump, but Trump isn’t THAT racist. He’s an opportunist. Therefore he will do racist things for a perceived advantage. Ergo denying black applicants to rent properties he owned, since he perceived this as lowering their value.

I don’t think he is consumed by thoughts of white supremacy. Rather, he certainly could pardon someone like this guy (not because he cares one way or the other) for a political gain

 

Just to add, this is a state crime so Trump has no power to pardon him anyway. Only the governor can

I read about this case the other day.

Sad. The man has an addiction and needs treatment.

 

Trump can't issue a pardon for a state conviction , only federal convictions.

The Gov of La could pardon him or order his release.

 

Texas has (or had) similar habitual offender laws.

 

This is pretty terrible given the limited info I know on the case. What I do know is that he wasnt sentenced to life for stealing hedge clippers. Some posters have no standards by posting click bait titles.

 

It opens people's eyes to laws that are ridiculously harsh and unjust. If you look at his crime history, 23 years of prison is already excessive. One crime was attempting to forge $150 check, and the final crime involved hedge clippers he said we're his wife's.

Sure, he broke the law too many times, but when you compare his offenses to many today the scale is unjust. Examples worse in my eyes that cause more harm, yet people serve far less time for are rape, child abuse, assault, and DUI's involving injury, or death, etc..

Think about the rich teen who killed 4 people in a DUI and got off basically with a slap on the wrist. Then you think about white collar criminals who scam and and steal thousands or millions from people or companies and basically serve a third of that time, if that.

Oh, and 80% of those charged under this old law in the south are black by the way. Laws need to change. The punishment scales are unbalanced beyond belief.

 

This, is the sad truth.

 

This is one area where I will Trump some credit. He and Jared Kushner helped to push criminal justice reform passed addressing excessive sentencing. Also Trump has made pardoned some black offenders. He famously pardoned Alice Johnson who had been under a life sentence for a non violent drug offense. That pardon was pushed by Kim Kardashian.
