Amazing speech I have to admit I'm starting to lean towards supporting Biden, but will wait until after the republican convention for a final decision.

I think it's fascinating to see the reactions and the low expectations people had. Biden has never been senile or incompetent - he's boring, he has some speech impediment issues, and he gets flustered and stumbles over words when in high-intensity situations (big crowds, debates, people yelling at him, etc). But people - including lots of Democrats - seem to have fully bought into Trump's narrative of him, despite knowing that Trump lies about everything. It shows the power of his "fake news".

Biden is the polar opposite of Trump - calm, coherent, empathetic, non-threatening, statesman, etc. This is exactly why he's the perfect candidate to run against Trump. Biden, arguably, couldn't beat any other normal GOPer - not McCain, Romney, Rubio, Cruz, etc - but he's basically built to beat Trump. This DNC structure is exactly the environment he shines in - when he can simply be calm and speak without interruptions or heckling or whatever else.

I don't think Biden is senile or incompetent but he is prone to exaggerate and meander in his stories. What I was worried about coming in was that he was going to make some self-righteous grandstanding statement like "They want to put y'all in chains!" or "You're not black if you don't vote for me".

This speech could've gone wrong in many ways. Even though it was written ahead of time and scripted delivery matters. There is obviously a lot of anger on the Democrat side and Biden's speech addressed that and some very controversial issues. Biden could've catered more towards that anger and delivered a fiery stump style speech. Instead he gave a quiet speech in the sense that it had very little bombast in content and style. I think that was very much the right note to hit.

A poor improv comic actually. The type with no real wit of humor, who simply makes fun of others for some laughs.

Yes, while the content is excellent and suits his style, his delivery of it is exactly his normal self. People actually think he is too senile to even deliver a speech - it’s simple ignorance.

The fact of the matter is :) people rarely take the time to listen to Biden or anyone but like to judge from a few clips they see. Today media is a large part of that issue.

I've listened to Biden for a long time. What really started getting me annoyed at Biden was his grandstanding as either Chair or Ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. His "C'mon buddy..." and forced folksiness got me really annoyed. Listening to his stump speeches also really bother me as those are the ones where he gets worked up "Malarkey!" and has many times told stories that either meandered like the "Cornpop" story or were heavily embellished like his story about the soldier who refused the medal..

Number of swing voters who switch to Obama = 0
    He doesn't have to.
All he has to do is get Joe talking .

As a matter of fact, that’s him. He doesn’t get the high educated, talking down, preaching, elitist label and is more relatable to many folks because of it.

Ps I liked him, as a down to earth person way back... before he was even considered anything more than just another senator from Delaware.

    It’s Official

Political conventions have been anticlimactic for decades and rarely more so than this particular Democratic National Convention. I stumbled across one characterization of from Marianne Williamson as like “binge-watching a Marriott commercial”.

I think different people have different reasons for supporting Joe Biden for president:

    • He’s not Trump (IMO probably the most common reason)
    • They long for a “return to normalcy”
    • They’re restorationists, longing for a return to the policies of the Obama Administration
Maybe somewhere there’s a voter who genuinely believes that VP Biden is genuinely the best presidential candidate out there. Maybe there is but I doubt it. I also don’t believe that picking Kamala Harris as his running mate will garner a single vote from anyone who wouldn’t have voted for him anyway. If anything I suspect it may lose him a few votes. I might have voted for Joe Biden and the right running mate. I won’t vote for Biden-Harris (I also won’t vote for Trump). Keep in mind that Sen. Harris didn’t collect a single delegate and 90%+ of Democratic primary voters picked anybody else. Tulsi Gabbard did better than Sen. Harris did. I think the results of the primaries were actually pretty clear. Regular Democrats by and large voted for Biden. Progressives voted for Sanders or Warren. That pretty much sums it up.

In my view both VP Biden and Sen. Harris are what used to be called “Nixonian centrists”. They feel out where the center of the party is and head there. Their stances are somewhat different because Joe Biden represented Delaware while Kamala Harris represents California and the center looks different to you depending on where you’re looking from.

I think the best case scenario for a Biden presidency is that the administration of the federal government goes back to the autopilot status of being run by the permanent bureaucracy while there’s a futile attempt at restoring the status quo ante in foreign policy, the area in which presidents ostensibly have the most influence. The reason that that we won’t see a restoration of the policies of the Obama Administration is it ürür, kervan yürür (the dog barks but the caravan goes on). There will be no restoration of Chimerica or imagined trust by the Europeans. We have nothing to offer the Iranians any more. I will be very interested in seeing how the Biden pro-immigration policy is reconciled with double digit unemployment. Or whether the Obama trade policies can be resuscitated, especially in the context of increased leverage on the part of the progressives in his party and their general attitude towards trade.
