In so ways the format worked better for Biden than a typical convention / campaign speech. I’ve felt Biden is at his best when he’s more quiet and subdued. He gets at his worst when he caught up in the emotion of a crowd and then he says stupid stuff like “they’ll put y’all into chains”. This format allowed him to stay focused and the more intimate nature allowed him to empathize including talking again about grief and sacrifice.

Agreed. I've never enjoyed the bombast of stump speeches and rabble rousing rallies.

@Corrosion , appreciate your reply. Just two follow-ups though.

First, it sincerely was not a tax cut for everyone, not close. It targeted a lot of city dwellers in blue states w increases, on purpose, like me and my wife, and it overwhelmingly benefitted the super rich. It is what it is.

I think you might not see the whole immigrant story in education. Students from overseas usually pay full freight, and that helps American universities then offer more financial aid to American students. I am an American worker, as is my wife, and we’ve been hurt by the policy, because our employers have been hurt.

No legit reason to dismiss this. I’m not trying to “win” a political argument. Just sharing a slice of our country.

Biden is very good at eulogies because he has experienced so much grief himself. When he’s grandstanding and especially when he’s giving freewheeling stump speeches he loses focus and that’s where he becomes very gaffe prone.

Biden is obviously a very touchy feely person and in many instances that’s where the creepy Biden comes out. When addressing grief though is where his touchy feely is seen as empathetic rather than inappropriate.

Yes. I had always believed that getting swept up in moment or crowd energy was a potential weakness for him. What I hadn't considered was that this version of a convention would safeguard against that while still letting his sincere personable side shine.

I had low expectations but was actually very impressed. I think this model works much better moving forward.

    100% agree.

This is one of those area where he and Trump are almost polar opposite. When he talks directly to the camera instead of to an audience, he's very personal and empathetic. When Trump does this, he's remote, impersonal and almost robotic. Clear advantage to Biden.

I wonder how many times he had to retake his segment.

Isn't that the truth! RoboTrump has no heart, no soul, and no remorse. It simply isn't in him.

Trump definitely feeds off of crowds and it's going to be interesting to see how they handle his speech. Trump clearly get's bored and disinterested when he's actually giving a speech. On the stump with a crowd he's less giving a speech and more freewheeling like an improv comic.
