As has been said, he was never supposed to be a "knockdown" shooter. Just one that was good enough to keep the defense honest. It seemed within reason that, given his decent shooting average, he might be a very good shooter in Houston, but the volume of threes we take offsets that a bit... Regardless, yes, he hasn't been good enough from outside yet, but especially if we're just talking about the bubble performance, I'm willing to dismiss his crap shooting as an aberration. I think it's likely he regresses to the mean in the playoffs.

Every team has a go-to offense, and no team wins if they shoot poorly... This idea of "having something to fall back on" is unquantifiable fluff. If your shots aren't falling, your shots aren't falling, and if you try to play differently as a result, you've usually already lost, no matter who you are. The things to "fall back on" are having multiple ways to get the shots you want, and multiple players who can get the job done on any given night, and when healthy, we just might have that.

Also, while I loved Clint and his P&R skills, that option [while potent] was not NEARLY a productive enough option to be considered a "fallback" if our three ball wasn't falling. Clint wasn't Shaq or Hakeem. He wasn't going to change the game for us if Harden was struggling, let alone if the whole team was. We were screwed both before and after that trade if we couldn't make jumpers... The only difference is that now we need to rely on a defense that can disrupt and cause turnovers as opposed to one that can depend on rebounding at a competitive rate to save some possessions.

Small ball is absolutely a gamble, and I'm not saying it's going to work... but it's pretty clear to me at this point why we are trying it. While the weaknesses are evident, it gives us some incredible advantages, especially in an era that isn't exactly replete with top tier big men (unlike when Don Nelson coached). This is our best shot after acquiring Westbrook.

    Exactly!

And not only was the Clint PnR no longer as productive, it was being nullified due to the successful and preemptive double teams on Harden.

The reason why Clint had to camp out in the dunker spot is because there was no where else he could go because an attempt at PnR would have brought his defender to the double team.

Anyone who has played basketball, heck any sports, at any level understand that having too many systems (option C, D, E) is the equivalent of being jack of all trades instead of being the master of ONE.

According to The Ringer (the sports and culture website founded by Bill Simmons) - Robert Covington is quite good and is in no way considered a scrub.

Bill Simmons the guy that said Harden’s assists are cheap which triggered this board is now a credible source?

Again, this thread wasn’t created to hate on Robert. It was made to discuss why he’s shooting so poorly but more importantly in hopes that he can fix it for the playoffs.

31% on the season as a Rocket and under 25% throughout the bubble. Quite scrubalicious indeed.

There’s so many hypocrites on this board. Westbrick is trash until he becomes a Rocket and all of a sudden he’s a key piece to a Championship.

When discussing random players and trades X, Y and Z players are bad fits for the Rockets because they can’t shoot at all. Well, Robert shot Andre Roberson percentages from deep during the bubble but everything is fine right? Something something Harden is a king and only we have him and nobody gonna stop us!!!!!1

Even with his 3ball slump Covington is +7 on the court.

For God's sake man, learn some basketball.
