Why isn't Karl Malone scrutinized more for his rape charges?

He got a 13 year old pregnant. She may have been 12 since the baby was born when she was 13. He was 20 and in college at the time. He never paid any child support for the son she had. He is Demetress Bell who played in the NFL for 5 years and is 36 years old now.

Those are the facts.

Because as a child, Karl Malone was abused in the paint by his father... Hakeem Olajuwon.

 

I think it was Chris Rock that said you should never hate anyone because who you hate would inevitably end up in your family. I would amend that to say you shouldn't hate anyone because you will become who you hate. I had heard about Karl Malone impregnating a teenager years ago, but at the time I didn't think to look into it at all. I read his Wiki and now this looks to be a case of Malone becoming the person he more than likely hated growing up: his father. Malone grew up fatherless. His father had a family of his own and choose that family over him. Malone probably figured if he could make it without a father, so could they, and he did basically the exact same thing his father did.

His son, Demetress Bell's Wikipedia says that the family of his mother, the 13-year-old girl, refused to press charges on Malone because that would keep him from making it to the NBA. So as wrong as Malone was for doing what he did - his lawyer even said that one of his brothers could also be the father -, the girl's own family choose money over justice. He paid some lump sum of money to settle a paternity lawsuit instead of having on-going child support payments. He later told his then 18-year-old son that it was too late to form a relationship with him. Years later, they reconnected, became close, and Malone regretted everything. Interesting story.

I think you can hate Karl Malone for raping a 12 year old girl without yourself becoming a child rapist. But that's just me.

 

How does this change the fact that he is a pedophile.

 

So that was a complicated case and it's difficult to know if he was guilty or not. But what you just did is called victim blaming and it's not so great.

As to Mike Tyson though.

He was accused, convicted and served his time. If he continued to participate in those behaviors or if new victims stepped forward I'm sure we'd see more backlash. But that the public was divided on his guilt at the time, he served his time and he has been, by all appearances, a fairly model citizen since would be why no one is now trying to hold him accountable. He's already been held accountable.

 

That is probably why he only did 3 years out of 10.
