I'm wondering if he thinks that MN can make up for losing MI? Given how many states he's in trouble in he can't afford to drop a state that he won previously unless he can make it up somewhere else.

The election is FAR from done. Just look at the landscape in April and early May compared to now.

Republicans WANT to like Trump, those that are claiming they will not vote for him are looking for a reason to vote for him because they policy wise do not agree with Biden. The key for democrats is to get those voters to stay home.

We are going to see a restructuring of both parties in the next 4-8 years. This is likely the last chance for the old coalition of democrats left over from Clinton/Obama. Same with the Republicans. A loss by Trump could speed up the process for the Republicans, who are very adept at political survival.

What I want to know is how the limitations of a convention will harm/help Trump. I suspect it hurts Trump because it is a constant reminder or COVID and it also limits the song and dance spectacle that the Republicans are good at.

The second question I have is how many democratic voters stay home because of COVID fears.

Either way, this race is going to narrow and it will again come down to the electoral college and likely close contests in a handful of states... with large states like Florida possibly deciding the entire election. Trump simply cannot lose Florida or Pennsylvania.

Minnesota is a strong possibility.... there are also rumblings of Virginia and Nevada and Oregon.

FWIW I think he holds onto most the competitive states like Texas, Florida and Arizona....... but there are so many that are tight, he could be in trouble is a state like Georgia goes to Biden.

Tarrant county is the one to watch. Size of San Antonio, formerly ruby red so Republicans don’t spend money here, but major growth and diversity.

The polling right now is very skewed due to the media and those on social media creating a hostile environment for people to say that they are Republicans. Polls have shown that 77% of conservatives are fearful of disclosing their political viewpoint to others... which is a reflection of the anger, rage, and intolerance of the left. What does that mean for polling? Is it under-counting conservatives?

Additionally, enthusiasm is firmly in Trump's favor... which usually means outperforming the polls.

Biden's strategy is a prevent defense strategy. He thinks he's up big, so he'll play it safe, sit in the basement, and sit on the lead. Biden is truly an awful come-from-behind politician, possibly in more ways than one. If he does blow "the lead" and falls behind in the race, then I don't think he can recover. I think he's replaced at that point. He's too old and frail to get out there and get in front of people/reporters to turn the tide.

Minnesota has been trending from blue to red for several election cycles. Obama won in 2008 by 10.2%, Obama won in 2012 by 7.7%; Hillary won it in 2016 by 1.7%.... you see the trend. Now layer on the people angry at BLM and anarchists for destroying Minneapolis....

A poll released yesterday showed only a 3-point Biden lead...with Biden only at 47%. This probably means the race is a dead heat (or Trump is ahead) due to under-counting of conservatives.

Well, more than a few people in the city will remember how a white cop bore down on George Floyd's neck until he was dead. Like, "dead for three minutes, just to make sure, then get up", dead.

Then there's how more than a few bad actors are helping all this play into Trump's hands. Maybe in Minneapolis they actually follow the news:

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/28/us/u...ite-supremacist-group-george-floyd/index.html

Minneapolis (CNN)Minneapolis police have identified a suspect whom they believe helped initiate the riots and destruction in the city following the killing of George Floyd.

According to a search warrant filed earlier this week, the man is associated with the "Aryan Cowboys," which the Anti-Defamation League lists as a White supremacist prison and street gang. The warrant does not label them as a White supremacist group, but describes them as a "known prison gang out of Minnesota and Kentucky." On its Facebook page, the group says it does not care, "about a person's color."
CNN is not naming the suspect, who was dubbed "Umbrella Man" following the demonstrations, as police said no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder told CNN on Tuesday that the case "remains an open and active investigation." But said he could not comment any further.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died after pleading for help as a police officer pinned him to the ground with his knee on Floyd's neck. Hundreds took to the streets of Minneapolis to protest his death, and demonstrations -- which were initially peaceful -- turned into what Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described at the time as "extremely dangerous."
Video of the "Umbrella Man" went viral after protesters in Minneapolis confronted and filmed him on May 27 while he was in the act of smashing several windows of an AutoZone store.
An arson investigator wrote in a search warrant affidavit that the man also spray painted the words "free sh*t for everyone zone" on the doors of the AutoZone. Not long after he smashed in the windows, looting began, and a bit later the AutoZone was set on fire, the affidavit said.
"This was the first fire that set off a string of fires and looting throughout the precinct and the rest of the city," Sgt. Erika Christensen, a Minneapolis police arson investigator, wrote in the affidavit, which was filed in court on Monday.
"Until the actions of the person your affiant has been calling 'Umbrella Man,' the protests had been relatively peaceful. The actions of this person created an atmosphere of hostility and tension. Your affiant believes that this individual's sole aim was to incite violence."
Previous attempts to identify 'Umbrella Man' failed
"Umbrella Man," who is appears to be White, was seen dressed all in black and wearing a black gas mask. He carried an umbrella and did not identify himself when confronted by peaceful protesters questioning what he was doing. Protesters and online sleuths began a furious search to try and identify him for weeks.
At one point, social media users misidentified him as a St. Paul police officer. The St. Paul Police Department quickly knocked down the allegation, saying the officer suspected was not even in Minneapolis at the time of the incident.
In the days following the fires and looting, both Gov. Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey mentioned the possible influence of outsiders and White supremacists who were on the streets to take advantage of heightened racial tensions.
"We are now confronting white supremacists, members of organized crime, out of state instigators, and possibly even foreign actors to destroy and destabilize our city and our region," Frey tweeted on May 30.
A tip helped uncover his identity, warrant says
Christensen said in the warrant that police recently received a tip regarding the identity of "Umbrella Man."
The tipster told the investigator that the man "wanted to sow discord and racial unrest by breaking out the windows and writing what he did on the double red doors."
The warrant says "Umbrella Man" was present during "an incident in Stillwater Minnesota where a Muslim woman was racially harassed by a group of motorcycle club members wearing Aryan Cowboy leather vests."
He was photographed with the group, according to the warrant.
The Aryan Cowboy Brotherhood did not respond to CNN's request for comment, and blocked the CNN reporter who reached out on social media.

Most Minnesotans are smart enough to realize that one bad cop doing something awful doesn't mean that all cops are bad people. Just like one black person committing a crime doesn't mean that all black people are criminals. Most Minnesotans also realize that they won't be safe and their economy will tank if the police are defunded.
