    KEY POINTS
    • The Seattle City Council passed the JumpStart Tax, a payroll tax on the city's biggest businesses and highest earners, including Amazon.
    • The legislation uses a tiered system of taxation, with the highest level designated for companies with annual payroll expenses of more than $1 billion.
    • It represents a major blow to Amazon, which fought the passage of a so-called head tax in 2018.
Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, who introduced the JumpStart legislation, said the tax's approval is a "big step towards creating a progressive tax system that works for all." The tax didn't garner support from Seattle's business community, however, with the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce saying the tax "pins Seattle's economic future on local businesses remaining strong, at a time when the depth and breadth of the crisis is still unfolding."

The passage of the JumpStart tax could further accelerate Amazon's move to secure office space outside of Seattle.

Amazon declined to comment on the JumpStart legislation.

Seems like a reasonable tax to help fund good programs to help the less fortunate.

Amazon (and tech companies as a whole) is a curse, you don't want it. They'll completely destroy your housing market. I guess its good for those that already own homes but it devastates the market for anyone who wants to eventually buy a house. Rent also increases in a proportionate manner and developers focus on high rent developments to cater to these new workers.

What you might want are satellite development offices (offices with less than 1000 people) but you don't want what Seattle has.

Hit Bezos on your celly, tell him you got a guest room for him to set up shop, can't promise him access to your garage tho you've already offered that to Elon so he can park his Teslas.

So let me get this straight. They plan to cut police funding by 50% and tax businesses more. Great recipe for long term success.

Good job Seattle. You'll be next Detroit in no time!

Texans like to work for a living
Seattle was cool when they had the SuperSonics and Nirvana but that was a long time ago

    https://businessfacilities.com/2020/07/amazon-create-1000-jobs-new-texas-fulfillment-center/

Amazon.com, Inc. will invest $250 million to open a new fulfillment center in the city of Pflugerville, TX. The site, which is anticipated to launch in 2021, will create 1,000 new full-time jobs.

“We’re appreciative of the people of Texas for so warmly embracing Amazon into the community,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment.

We've tried. Bezos doesn't like hurricanes and historic floods. Conroe could easily handle them.

Good... Tax the f out of billionaires. This really should not concern any of us that don't regurarily dine with Mexican industrialists.

No it can't. Amazon has 50000 employees in Seattle (most of whom are in downtown Seattle). Houston literally doesn't have the transportation infrastructure to support that. Just think of the highway traffic alone caused by this. And the downstream impact on housing will be catastrophic in the long term. Houston is in no position to support a company like that.
