White privilege is a lot more prevalent in regards to law enforcement. We can debate how much the past affects today but it's the past. A lot of families regardless of race didn't have much until post WWII
A lot of familes owned houses/land...that's a lot. In fact, you should look at the G.I bill that rewarded soldiers coming back from WW2...if they were white that is.
I saw the systematic racism thread. There was segregation in neighborhoods but the economy benefited everyone. My post was in regards to the entire country not just veterans
South Asians in this country are pretty privileged so it's not surprising the young author doesn't understand it.
LOL! Or you can pretend to be a poor refugee and feel entitled to receive free housing, free healthcare, free benefits and free education.
I agree with you in principle. However the dialog over the generations has gotten lost in translation. There was a time when the ultra wealthy ran this country with unchecked power. We built a country on freedom... provided the ultra wealthy could do whatever they want. Including owning people. Over the years this became synonymous with 'White people'. White people benefited from letting the ultra wealthy do whatever they want. Over the years people became very hostile to the thought of owning humans. History has largely rewritten it to be a civil war, but it was more of a revolution against human trafficking. It was one of the last major holdouts. After the Civil War is when white privileged came about. Blacks were no longer owned, but they had no rights but to their life. And this carried on until the 60's. The problem wasn't so much the bigots, even though that was a serious problem. It was just white people in general didn't give a **** about the plight of the black people. And it was the whites who gave powers to the authorities who systematically abused the black population. And after the 60's when it was no longer cool to be racist, the systematical oppression still continued. Not because they are black and white people have some deep seated hatred for blacks. Its just because white people still dont give a ****. They continue to elect the same stupid politicians year in and year out who do absolutely nothing. The Great Black hope certainly didnt do much for the black population either. That is what white privilege is about. The ability to freely get up and tout some edgy BS political line but when it comes time to vote, its the same thing.
76% of the US population is white and men have had all rights and privileges in this country longer than any other group. White/male privilege is absolutely real. Maliciously choosing whites over blacks or men over women isn’t as big of a threat anymore, obviously. But I think it’s silly to deny that people have a sense of comradery amongst people who look like them. It’s inherent bias. It’s subconscious
In terms of corporate America I think in terms of hiring, blacks are pretty well treated. Larger corporations go out of their way to have diversity. Now in all honesty its probably only been like that for the last 30 years. The problem is education.
I disagree. I seldom see black people in positions of power or decision making in corporate America, and even less in small and medium sized businesses.
The problem is the numbers from the bottom ranks. Not enough to choose from to put in positions of power. I think companies that go out of their way to hire minorities also move them up. When I was at UT there were 2k blacks out of 50k students
White privilege isn't really about money or class, it's about race. It's about how people perceive race in themselves and others, and how they project the power of race. White privilege isn't just about white people's attitudes towards whites and blacks, it's about black people's attitudes about whites and blacks. It's not just about entitlement and stereotypes, it's about the pecking order that has developed. White privilege is racism in its most insidious form.
Black engineering students from UT will transfer to Prairie View their final year because companies go there to hire black engineers. I know that doesn't jive with my previous post but I'm just making a point about corporate America's efforts to hire minorities
No it's not. We're just talking about corporate America. In Houston before the oil bust un the early 80s black men were doing very well in blue collar trades. You took that out of context. Black people have been in corporate America since the seventies. I'm just saying there is more effort and less resistance in the last 30 years. If you go back and watch the video in the systematic racism thread blacks were actually closer to whites in 1970 in blue collar jobs. Now black kids are behind in college and trades.
