It should be, but it isn’t. When I was in elementary school in Katy, I remember one day where our gym class went to the local park for a basic swim lesson, but it wasn’t a regular thing, and I learned how to swim through private lessons at a family friend’s house when I was young.

That requires effort (a school taking classes to a pool) and having a pool available. In some inner city schools that isn’t possible. Also there is the fear of lawsuits.

It is absurd, it should be taught to everyone. However that also requires a sense of community that just doesn’t exist in the USA overall.

It can also be embarrassing to some people. Andre Dawson discussed having to learn to swim in his 50’s and how liberating it was. He now has swim classes and is trying to encourage swimming in poorer areas and for adults that never learned.

Dog-whistle. Blaming it on "culture" when that "culture" was molded by slavery and segregation which you and many others will always choose to blatantly ignore, and for what reason?... one could only guess I suppose. Black people do not have the same access to swimming or swimming lessons, the video posted clearly goes over that.

Whoops, guess the dog whistle wasn't necessary since your blowing an airhorn. I guess this really is a troll account because it can't be by accident that your asking black people to not wear basketball shorts but expensive name brand clothing.

That video had me in tears, yet I'm not surprised for a second on the willingness of some to fight it, because if you accept the point the video is making, you would realize the point is the same across things much broader then just swimming for the black community, and that just can't happen, can it?

anyone who posted in this should have at least completed that 10 minute video

and should have at least been disgusted at the part when someone poured acid on the pool

Do you need school or private swimming lessons to learn how to swim??
Sure if you want to learn butterfly but to learn basic swimming you dont need no tutor.
Parents/ relatives teach their children ...?

Dude, what are you talking about? Expensive brand name clothing? You can pick up Vineyard Vines Island Chappy Swim Trunks for less than $100.

In the specific story the mom didn't know how to swim, there was no public pools in their town. It's quite common here, black people not knowing how to swim is a thing, I think it's a crazy number like over 50% can't or have very limited swimming skills.

Edit - 64% according to this gov source

Those are 90 dollars. With taxes 98 dollars.

You know exactly what you were doing by saying you have beef with black people wearing basketball shorts to the beach, they shouldn't come to swim in such inappropriate apparel, how about they go and grab 100 dollar swimming trunks before they are allowed to be in your presence, right? Your garbage dude.

Could you address the actual video? That channel actually has a lot of good pieces.

He couldn't actually address the video, he'd have to admit that systemic racism is real and has quantifiable effects on black people. Fake news it is I guess, or he could pull a TJ if he wants with the racist dog whistle "It's actually just their culture to drown, please quit coming to the beach black people, unless you are the kind who can afford to wear name brand swim shorts".

Black people not being able to swim is just another typical stereotype.

Probably not. There is an instinct when put in water to move your limbs and hold your head above water but the actual efficient swimming motions no. Definitely not floating as floating on your back takes a comfort level with the water that if you don't have it you will panic.

They get really offended that it exists and not offended because it harms black people but offended because it requires a little bit of self awareness and introspection of our nation and its history. Can't do that. You gotta blindly cheerlead for America and claim all the problems that exist are because of migrants and poor black people.

I'm sure all kids who have access to swimming pools, whether in apartments or the local community can learn to swim without lessons. It's not a black or white thing. It's not any harder to learn to swim than it is to ride a bike. I never took lessons, and learned how to swim at an apartment pool as a young kid. Later, I was lucky enough to spend summers at the local community pool and trips to the beach. Not all kids have that opportunity.

Yes exactly. Its not like swimming requires many resources to learn or is a priviledge..it has more to do with access. Do all whites in america know to swim?
Because many white europeans who live in the middle of the continent ,regardless of class, and rarely see the sea dont know how.
I have met many especially english, austrian, swiss, polish.

The key is access to a safe place to swim.

Sure there are beaches, lakes, & rivers, but those are incredibly dangerous to learn to swim in as there are currents and sudden unexpected changes in depth.

I agree. I learned in a small apt pool first. A lake or ocean isn't the place to learn. Most importantly, if a child is not a good swimmer they should always wear a lifejacket in a boat, lake or ocean. Just because they are in shallow water at a beach doesn't mean they can't be swept out by a rip tide.
