As soon a a few kids get the virus in a school, parents will Immediately be bringing their children home. Rumors will be flying around like crazy. I don’t think forcing kids to physically be in school is the answer.

The school district in my neighborhood is giving parents the option to send their kids to school, or let them learn from home. I know many parents are planning to keep their children home.

As a husband and a father, my primary job to protect my wife, daughter and myself and keep us safe, even if it inconveniences me (having to stay home more than normal). In these trying times, that also includes ensuring we don’t pass COVID-19 to my parents, etc.

I value education as much as anyone, but it isn’t going to irreparably harm a child’s development to take a gap year in the worst case scenario. I would find online curriculum for their grade level and home school them in the interim. Education starts in the home, anyway.

Uh, the percentage of two working parent families that will opt to keep them home is going to be very low.

People who have to home school kids and work full time are going to lose their jobs, which is literally deadly in this country.

Schools need to make every possible effort to reopen for child care more than anything else.

Remember when people said Obama was divisive but yet here we are with this crap. Wonder how many people are going to call teachers snowflakes for not wanting to return to classrooms.

Why would the CDC be threatened by this administration to downplay guidelines band whether schools should reopen?

So now Trump is going to bully state governors into reopening the schools -- without paying for adequate preparation. New Day's Alysin Camerota asked Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association, if public schools are really ready to reopen in September.

"Did you hear the word he didn't use? 'Safely.' Safely. There's no one that wants their kids back with us more than teachers," Garcia said.

"Maybe their parent. Maybe their parents beat us out there, but we want to open it safely. We see what happens when they let bars open prematurely and you saw those young adults in there in that nice little bar and they went home and they infected everybody around them. This isn't a bar. We're talking about second graders. I had 39 sixth graders one year in my class.

"I double dog dare Donald Trump to sit in a class of 39 sixth graders and breathe that air without any preparation for how we're going to bring our kids back safely."

Let me guess... the solutions HAS TO BE private faith based schools. Clearly the issue with controlling Coronavirus in our schools is the liberal communist propaganda in our public schools.

We need to vote all these ****ers out. We are absolutely stuck with this **** show unless we vote them out of office. I am telling everyone that I can to please go and vote. I don't see any way around this. The majority of republicans have sold their soul to the devil and refuse to check Trump. **** man, the system has failed.

The problem of course is that reopening be schools is a super important goal - but Trump is such a toxic ****wit that when he endorses it he immediately kneecaps good faith efforts to do it

I seriously doubt that Trump really cares whether students are back in school or not. If that was really the goal then yes providing funding to make schools safe would be being looked at rather than looking to penalize school districts. Also consider many of these people now demanding students be back in schools are the same people who have been pushing home schooling and vouchers to weaken the public school system. This is yet another political ploy. It's meant to create a dilemma among Democrats by saying that "Democrats value education and want to use the schools for all sorts of social programs but they don't want to allow them back into schools to scare people over Coronavirus."

As a teacher and a coach I want to go back to school as much as anybody. I want to see my students on a daily basis again. I want to be able to teach them. I want to see the look on their faces when they accomplish something they never thought was possible.

As a coach I already work an average of 12 hours a day, 7 days a week during school. Now I’m going to have to do that while accounting for the curriculum of the students at school as well as the ones at home. Which means even more hours working, all while being a parent to a one year old baby girl (my wife is a teacher as well, so same boat for her).

I’m willing to do this, though, because I want the students to learn.

But I also want to know that when we do this, we are doing it safely. We’re following every possible protocol we can to ensure students, teachers, and the rest of the staff are as safe as they can be.

This means the school has to do it for the right reasons.

The fact that the president is threatening to defund schools who don’t do it means many schools that are worried about putting their students and staff in danger will reopen not because they think it is safe, but because they don’t want to lose money.

Its BS, and screw the president for trying to force schools into doing it.
