Without context, this "96% similar!!" is one of those dumb headline grabbers that is completely meaningless. What does 96% similar even mean? How similar is Covid to the common cold or other coronaviruses? Humans and chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA, right?

If you had read the article you would have known that it is the closest ancestor they have ever found.

Lord help us if virus genome was as complex and huge as ours , where a couple % is the difference between Einstein and a bonobo.
But nope. Its so little and simple that a 5% means your grandfathers were in the **** of the same bats.

This is also meaningless without context. How many different ancestors have they found? How similar are they in transmission, symptoms, effects, etc? I don't even get the meaning of any of this. Before this article, did we think this virus has never existed in any form before? Do we assume that we should be prepared for a pandemic because 7 years ago a handful of people got a sickness that likely few people spent any time researching or analyzing?

Respectfully, The Daily Mail is also The Daily Mail. They are known for being comically sensationalist in their science reporting. The Wikipedia article has citations if you need them - though you can't cite a Daily Mail article on Wikipedia as they have been banned as unreliable.

Should I be able to find a rapid PCR test available (I live in Louisiana)? I am needing to go to Aruba in a few weeks and the require this. The googler is not helpful.

Two ancestors. Again if you had actually read the article you would have known the symptoms. Fever, pneumonia and cough.

What is the meaning of this?
Lol why do you think the WHO has sent a special forensic squad in China and hundreds of genetic labs and universities spent so many funds in virus genealogy?
We need to find where the virus came from to discover IF and WHERE there is an animal natural deposit.

But what a coincidence that the closest ancestor was found and collected 8 years ago by the lab in Wuhan.
And how strange that the epidemic didnt start from Southern China but in Wuhan?
Especially since now we know that at the beginning it had a 50% mortality before it adaoted to humans.
Where are the bodies in southern China?

Do you really think the DM would have broken this story on their own? It is from the Sunday Times that they copied it from but thats behind a paywall.

Again .... it isn’t just about whether YOU can get it. It is about SPREADING it to others. Masks help limit the spread.

Ive disagreed with you until this point.

But for some, its easier to follow the lockstep to a Hollywood story like Contagion. It had a happy ending afterall. Early on the virus was presented like the one in Contagion.
However we are finding its quite a bit different. Its not as deadly for one. Its unusually contagious and deadly in optimal environments.

Whats more likely; Some person in a wet market got a high viral load from an animal and one that just so happened to evolve at the right moment to be highly contagious...but not so contagious its burns itself out right away.

Or a old specimen evolving while being studied was accidentally released.

Neither of these are far fetched ideas. So I am not sure why it really matters which it was for the time being.

    Exactly,

Just like 99ers share the same board as non 99ers, we're clearly the superior members

One wants to place some responsibility on the individual.
One wants to place the responsibility on to others.

Robbie did not say he was anti mask. He simply stated, and correctly, we should be doing more.

Take a dump in your pants. Then tell me how much a mask helps from the smell. Im not anti-mask. An open turd in an enclosed room will smell much much worse than on in the middle of the street covered up.

Oh dont worry. Genealogists are able to find even when the flu mutated in 96AD. They WILL find when this virus mutated to a human one.

It didnt happen immediately, because thats not how it works.
    Thats why I am asking.
Both the ancestors found had been collected by the Wuhan lab. Both were hundreds of thousands of miles away in Southern China.

Where are the bodies? Especially for the new one.
It should have left a trail of dead bodies behind as it made its way to Wuhan for teh last 8 years. Local small epidemics etc.

It is EXTREMELLY suspicious that the epicentre of the adapted virus is in Wuhan where the lab is.

Ok. I just tried that, and although this isn’t very scientific, I “think” it was smellier with the mask off.

Did you try 2 tests? 1 with pants on, one with pants off?
