Sort of. You detect more cases since about half are estimated to be asymptomatic, but they’re still positive cases who can spread the infection to 2-4 more people on average during their illness assuming no mitigation. More cases means more people needing hospitalization and more people needing ventilators. If the growth is too fast, notably hospitalizations and vent usage, we are back to square 1 before the lockdown and have nothing but a broken economy to show for it. These people take about 10 days to get really sick and once they’re at that level it may be days, weeks, and rarely even months before they can go home safely from the hospital, if they don’t succumb to COVID. I pray it won’t happen that way, but it’s not like we have any reason to expect otherwise at this point.
When USA incompetence forces football (both college and pro) to be canceled this fall then people will start getting angry
You rang? I didn’t get triggered. I simply just expressed that I think you are an idiot if you think that’s all that matters. If you really wanted to talk about covid, you’d want to discuss case count, hospitalization rates, hospital capacity, non-death impacts of covid, and hosts of other issues that intelligent subject matter experts have discussed at length when having a real discussion about the impacts of covid. I don’t expect that you’ll take on the issues because you’re a simpleton who hopes to vindicate a myopic view that covid is no big deal, it’s all a dem hoax, just let the old people die. Prove me wrong and take this on if you like, but I suspect you’ll keep sitting at the kids table. Finally, let’s not kid ourselves, nobody believes you wear a mask.
The growth in confirmed cases and the growth in tests done is not 1:1. More testing should actually lead to less cases - as people who test positive should self-quarantine and slow the spread. That is what is happening in NY. In Texas, however, we had a little plateau and then a spike. But, the Texas response earned the Gov a pat on the head from Trump, so that's all that matters.
If the death rate is minuscule for those under 60, then I'm not concerned for those people. I am concerned about the vulnerable, and they should be protected. I do wear a mask - no lie. One of the soapboxes that I always get on is the media's impact on impressionable people. They absolutely are spreading "panic p*rn", and some of it is political, although it's also to get eyeballs to watch, which garners them more ad revenues. Folks like deb and you fall for it, and then try to look smart by quoting so-called experts who haven't had a clue for much of the virus' history. The predictions of millions of deaths never came to pass, neither did all the hospital overruns.
It's really not fair to keep elderly and people with other health conditions basically in a state of fear of even going to vote, take care of business, shop etc...because loose and carefree spreading gets worse and worse. They are the ones at risk of dying more than young people. It's not all about the young people not dying much, and that selfish attitude is really what bothers me most.
Soon this thread is likely to be more appropriately titled "When we re-close." It's hard to imagine, even in science-fiction, how anyone could have mismanaged a crisis of such proportions any worse than this one has been.
What do you mean? We've always been compared with countries like Russia and Brazil. We've always had our asses handed to us by China with the amount of infected cases and poor containment infrastructure. This is nothing new. Media overreaction and liberal tears fuel my petty and limited existence! Carry on...
That's what Trump said 3 months ago. It's just not anything to worry about. We just differ in opinions.
this is the intellectual equivalent of saying “fake news”, attacking the media, and predictably declining to address any facts that run contrary to your narrative that everything is fine. People like you and the entire current Republican Party except Romney care more about politics than science. You idiots cannot even mandate that people wear face coverings. Hell, your leaders struggle to even model the behavior. Trumps refusal to lead by example is causing his brainless sycophants to view the issue of wearing masks as a political one, rather than a matter of simple science, and frankly common sense and decency.
A couple points: 1) Your democratic superstar Cuomo sent positive covid19 patients into nursing homes, and has by far the worst record of results in the country. You didn't mention him in your GOP screed. I wonder why? 2) Science involves a forming a hypothesis, and then re-testing it as new information and facts come to light. Your definition of science appears to be "form an early opinion, never waver from it, and tell everybody else with another viewpoint or new information to shut up". That's not science.
cuomo hasn’t done a good job. I got no issue with that. What Cuomo has to do with anything is beyond me, other than republican go to point to deflect from failures. I live in Houston, so abbot and trumps massive failures impact my life (in trumps case, the nation). I have no idea what your comment about science is supposed to mean, as applied to anything I’ve said or anyone else. Explain if you care to. I do know one thing, you can’t offer any legitimate explanation for Trumps refusal to wear a mask, it’s impact on his follows who also refuse to wear masks, and Abbott’s failure to require it. It’s a crap ton of failure and I know you won’t bother to address it.
What makes me laugh at the "only death rates matter" people is the fact that they ignore the amount of people stuck on ventilators. Like who the **** wants to be stuck on a ventilator? Theres 60 people on ventilators right now in San Antonio alone. Who knows what long term effects corona has? Certainly not @bigtexxx
the republican/trump way is to isolate on one thing to sell a false narrative to the hoards of dummies who follow along. Whether ts focusing on covid deaths, or trump harping on him banning travel from China to sell the public that he did a great job on covid. It’s the same approach that his followers adopt every time. Very simple to deceive and convince the masses (well some masses).
They don't even have to try at this point, and they don't. Whatever is good for the right, just say it and run with it, it can be the complete opposite of personal common sense, statements from doctors, scientists, teachers, whoever, it really just doesn't matter.
Agreed. Even if testing exposes more "non-deadly asymptomatics" those people should have more reason to wear a mask. It's not a political agenda. It's purely selfish to want others to mask up so that numbers go down to the point where I can go out without feeling like Howard Hughes wearing his tissue boxes.
I really do think we could have managed this better if Trump did not make a virus a partisan issue. As we know by now, Trump's remaining supporters are dug in and are loyal to him to a fault. Imagine if he wore masks and told his supporters to take this seriously, They would have listened, fallen in line and we would all benefit from it, including the economy. There's really no need to make a biological force of nature a partisan issue.
Shutting down bars and eating inside restaurants would be a good start. They aren't essential. How many people in Houston pour in and out of them daily? That's just a start, but one that worked well in Ireland so far.
