So are mask an effective preventative against covid or not? I kept reading a lot of people who say it does nothing so I finally started researching and it seems that they are not that great especially surgical mask. From what I have read it seems social distancing is the best preventative and mask help with that. It seems to me from what I have read is that it concerns filtering out droplets and the size of said droplets, to me it still looks like its another level of protection and not a 100% safe. Am I understanding this correctly?
kind of, yes. As @KingCheetah once posted, virus particles can go through these masks like golf balls (or something) through a soccer net. BUT, that said, they catch big nasty droplets, which is super helpful - the virus needs to be in water to survive really - and a good mask restricts the plume of air flow, especially when someone talks, laughs, or coughs. so, not 100% effective at all, but MOST medical folks will say they help an infected person not spread the infection to others. But yeah, people are, as usual, cherry picking studies that support their preference. I currently have this view: avoid spending much time indoors with random people. Period. Masks or no: if you spend an afternoon in a room w a virus-shedding person, even at 6-foot distance, etc, you have been majorly exposed.
My understanding is that when a droplet exits your body it begins to shrink as the water evaporates. So the droplets are biggest when they first come out and get smaller the longer they are suspended in air - which also means they can more easily penetrate a mask of someone sucking air in. So it's really important for people to wear masks to limit the amount of the virus that gets airborne in the first place.
'Heartbreaking,' Say Global Experts, Alarmed at Signs US Has 'Given Up' Fight to Stop Covid-19 Global public health experts are looking on in "alarm and disbelief" as the U.S. economy reopens even as Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise in a number of states, with President Donald Trump signaling he has no intention of calling for more economic shutdowns regardless of the outcome. Infectious disease specialists around the world—some of whom used U.S. scientists' research to guide their own governments' strategies in confronting the pandemic, pushing them to prepare for long-term lockdowns necessitating robust economic relief packages—are struggling to understand the logic of reopening the country as case numbers grow, the Post reported. "It really does feel like the U.S. has given up," Siouxsie Wiles, a specialist at University of Auckland in New Zealand. https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/06/19/heartbreaking-say-global-experts-alarmed-signs-us-has-given-fight-stop-covid-19
^for reference, half of the new cases worldwide are coming from Trumplandia Trump wanted closed borders... He's getting his wish when other countries turn Americans away
Only things that can save us is an effective vaccine, development of a very effective drug, the virus mutating into something less harmful, or herd immunity after we let it ravage the country for years. The White House and many in society no longer give a damn. I doubt Trump has had a single conversation with Fauci this entire month. Fauci pretty much got kicked out and tossed into the bushes.
I shouldn’t be surprised at this point, but Trump supporter stupidity still amazes me if it was some dumb high school freshman saying this stuff, then ok, but this is a grown man as for Trump, his recycled talking point about testing is so fcking dumb...this is the leader of our country...his yes men just go along with the tomfoolery
I feel much safer about the entire situation knowing that trump is actually capable of drinking water with 1 hand
My parents lived in Oklahoma for a few years and always talk about how amazing it was. I now understand it. You literally live amongst minions.
The level of stupidity from diehard Trump supporters and the president himself knows no bounds. This Trump supporter watched a friend die from the virus and his friend’s son needed a ventilator, and, yet, he still supports Trump’s bullshit and thinks wearing masks are unnecessary.
it’s amazing...all those people packed together for hours, or days if you’re talking about the idiots who were camping out for this flop of an event...none wearing masks, and the vast majority were middle aged or older with many looking like they were clinically obese...good luck to any of the idiots who end up catching Covid
While you sneer at these "dumb people", you do have to notice how they live peacefully and self-sufficiently, whereas the enlightened, woke urban core is filled with crime, violence, poverty, and chaos. Hmm... maybe these Oklahomans aren't as dumb as you thought! The left has literally learned nothing from 2016. Claims to want equality and understanding, then mocks people who don't look like them. No cred.
