UCLA professor suspended after refusing to give black students’ lenient marking due to ‘trauma of George Floyd’s death’

    http://washingtonpost.com/health/uc...e6410e-ab82-11ea-a43b-be9f6494a87d_story.html

Dark days for those who want social and economic progress in this world. Even if you don't believe in a merit based society, which many of you struggle to deal with, this mentality will never lead to improving the lives of college educated black students.

I think it's misleading to say he was suspended for not giving the students what they wanted.

A professor should not mock his students for a request like this. He can simply say he'll take it into consideration and then decline to do so, but to answer the way he did is unprofessional and unbecoming and would not seem to reflect the values of any university.

There is absolutely no mockery in his response. The way he responded was incredibly professional and matter of fact to anyone who isn't entitled and expecting special treatment.

I find the request to be interesting and not well thought out at a minimum if not an example of entitlement we see in the USA.

Regardless the response from the professor was unprofessional and also showed poor judgment.

Professors are not managers at a company. They are in charge of forcing students to think critically. I believe his rhetorical questions are inline with how a professor would typically respond to any student question. Lead them to understand why people might disagree with their request.

While I understand that perspective, I don’t think it was appropriate. He knew he was venturing into a hornets nest and only fanned the flames. I do not envy him as he was in a tough spot, but should have addressed it with the administration.

We can say he shouldn’t have to defer to administration but we deal with issues or concerns that are not fair or difficult all the time.

People are testing boundaries on all sides in light of what is happening in this country and as a society we have not coalesced around what the new boundaries are yet.

I couldn’t make out what the students were asking for from the article. Giving more lenient marks to students based on race is a terrible idea in general, if that’s really what they were asking for, and it deserves to be mocked IMO.

It happens all the time in academia. People have a sick mom or because of coronavirus want a break. My sister is a professor and so many kids ask for a break because of the coronavirus. She used to say no to things like this but then the students complain to the admin and she has to do a ton of paper work and justify her decision so now she just gives in because it's not worth her time. She says rich kids are the most guilty as they feel they are more entitled.

I don’t agree it was mocking and I deem his diction as a opportunity as a lesson to be learned and he provided historical content to arrive at that

How do you give a "lenient marking"?
An answer is either right or wrong.
Telling someone they were right when they were wrong is not doing the individual any favours.

I mean, if the students just are requesting leniency in grading for all students given the difficulties of the time -- especially when it could be disproportionately affecting students of a certain background -- I see no problem with that. And I don't interpret that as "special treatment" for those students who could otherwise be affected more than others by the pandemic or BLM protesting. So, the professor would be wrong to construe it in that way, if that's what the situation was.

From the professor's response, it sounded like they were asking him to specifically grade black students more leniently. That would be a ridiculous request, one that I think is especially insulting to the black students in the class who may not have been involved.

I think they were asking for a "no-harm" finals. Meaning, the grade only counts towards possibly improving their final grade and it won't bring down their final grade.

Yes it was white kids who made the request not the black kids

He was not suspended for what you claim. Several other professors received the same response, and responded no. They did so in a respectful manner and were not fired. This prof was fired because of how addressed the student, and not because of his answer.
