The tweet editorialized the article to say they were the masterminds. That does not mean they are being setup, but that its intellectually lazy/dishonest to say these two specifically are the reason why people were looting.
Bloody hell, now Atlanta is rioting for a justified shooting. The chief of police resigned and the mayor threw the cops under the bus. Protesting over how police treated those students is reasonable. This recent shooting isn't.
I feel bad for the family of Rayshard Brooks but my dude you have to be able to read the room. Cops are killing black folks left and right, you fell asleep at a Wendy's drive thru, failed a FST, and then wrestled with officers, took their taser and aimed it at them? WTF did you expect them to do?
I agree. I’ll argue Black Lives Matter until I’m blue in the face but the police officers in this case tried to arrest him peacefully. He resisted, literally fought them, stole a taser, fled, and pointed it at an officer as he was running away. If the officer doesn’t do what he did, both officers could have been in terrible trouble. They had a right to defend themselves as far as I’m concerned.
That's the entire problem. Cops don't know how to deescalate or just let a perp run, and they especially need to read the room. They shoot first. Six months of school with no psych eval is bad. I've always said cops need a four year degree and a psych eval. No, they didn't. They knew who he was, could have gotten him later. The long arm of the law always prevails.
The dude got executed for stealing a taser. What is he going to do with a taser. They could have just arrested him later. You know who he is. You know the whole world is watching the cops. Can't the cops just think a little bit about the result of their actions?
Still I’m not poking the bear right now with everything going on. Go to jail and live to fight another day.
Look at this tweet and it’s responses for videos of cops NOT killing people in threatening situations.
The onus here, and always, is on the cops to keep cool heads. The cops (kids, really) in this shooting did not. Reminds me of when I worked in prisons and the ‘guards’ that were hired for private prisons were just kids out of high school. Very minimal training but held people’s lives in their hands.
He was killed for firing a taser at police. Watch the body camera footage. You can hear the taser deploy before the cop returned fire. Rayshard was a danger to the public. He already demonstrated that by DWI. He just assaulted two police officers, stole a service weapon, and ran. His judgment is impaired and he has a weapon. He's already been violent. How many violent felonies do you need to rack up before police should pursue you?
I doubt that the Atlanta cop will be convicted. Reasonable people can disagree about his spur of the moment decision facing someone who aimed a stolen taser at him. As for the protest for this death— at this moment, the protests are no longer about any individual case.
What happened in Atlanta last night is far grayer than what happened to George Floyd. It is important to note that he wasn't under the control of LE and had taken a weapon off of LE but a less than lethal weapon. Whether that meant they had to escalate to lethal force is very questionable and we don't have video of the actual moment that Brooks was shot. One thing I will say is this is a big failure for two LEO to be unable to restrain one man and take him into custody while he was able to take a weapon off of them. Grappling training including sparring should be a requirement of LE.
Danger to public = summary judgement and execution by a cop? That’s so wrong on so many levels that I implore you to go back and read the history of the founding of this country. That’s exactly why we split with England. Using your logic, if your kid gets wasted and starts swing his arms around and a cop shoots him/her, you’re ok with that? Or if your mother gets Ebola, it’s ok if the doctors just ‘mercy kill’ her ‘to protect the public’ like they did with genetic ‘inferiors’ in Germany in the late 1930s? Here’s another flaw in your logic: a taser is a deadly weapon. If that’s the case, why do cops carry them as an alternative weapon? Why can you just buy one without the restrictions that guns have? Please do some heavy thinking. This isn’t about being right, it’s about doing the right thing.
Yeah obviously not in the same universe as Floyd, and I doubt criminal charges are called for, but completely unnecessary. I mean worst case just let him get away at that point. Catch him probably sooner than later as he's on foot. They had his car, he was no longer a DWI threat to public safety, partner was behind him, had backup if he went down from the taser, and then what, tried to kill him by beating him to death before his partner could stop him? They would have already determined he didn't have a weapon. End of the day that guy was not posing a lethal threat but was met with one, and the cops knew it.
A taser isn't going to kill anyone. There were a lot of people there. The people there who took video seemed to be not be on the cops side. They didn't just pursue him they killed. As a cop you need think think. If you can't process the consequences of your action then maybe shouldn't be a cop. There were a lot of people there what happens if they decide to mob the police are they going to start shooting them? The cop got fired. The chief of police got fired, and for what? Was Rayshard going to kill someone? He was asleep in his car.
