This was an overreaction by HBO most black people feel this way.

CNN did a good segment on it.

But even the actor who won that award wasn't happy with her role saying that it was inaccurate to portray blacks as happy to be slaves - but she did the role because she didn't want to jeopardize her career.

I think HBO saying hey, we're going to take this down for a bit and put it back up with context isn't a terrible thing to do. What's wrong with that?

I watched a little of Gone With The Wind a few years ago. No one ever talks about a scene with freed slaves saying how they pretty much wished they were back on the plantation. That's pretty bad

    Context ?
People who watch gone with the wind knows it’s old and it’s in civil war era
It’s not like they are going to see Vin Diesel roll up in a GTO

It’s a steaming service and they are narrating what they watch not what they choose to watch

also this is reaching to the deep end
Nobody signed up for HBO for Gone with the Wind

    this is also fiction

    they politicized choice now

Presentism is really dangerous. If you judge people in the past by today's standards, you basically have to "cancel" most of human history. This leads to groupthink and censorship.

    HBO is motivated by money
They need subscribers cause game of thrones is over

showing the public that they care by sacrificing some super old movies is a ploy to get viewership

nobody was watching gone with the wind and nobody even knew it was on hbo

This is done with intent. Gone With the Wind is one of the most famous movies of all time, and certainly one of the most recognizable. For 80 years every even slightly intelligent person on earth knew this was a period piece.

Its a stunt by HBO to show they are woke. They will make a grand gesture of putting it back online with a "woke" warning statement in front of the movie, but show they are "true to the craft" by not actually changing the movie content. Its all Hollywood BS.

Looks like we are agreeing with each other.

The only disagreement that we have is the relevancy of Gone With the Wind. :) I'd posit that while people may not be getting HBO to watch it, its a big deal that it's in the library.

I agree with you that gone with wind is a relevant movie

It’s that nobody was watching it recently
And definitely nobody was watching it on HBO

it’s not like they removed the Sopranos

If they have some balls, they should get the rights to Roots and put a big disclaimer on the front if it "Racist depictions may cause you to feel uncomfortable"

LOL, why would anybody listen to you? Hey speaking of censorship - in the interests of free speech and the exchange of ideas, here's some terrible takes from you on white primacy and how we should bend the knee in 2017

Everything in moderation and viewing the complete picture.

I remember when the Confederate monuments were being taken down.

Everyone assumed I would automatically support it. While I understood why people wanted them taken down, I also viewed them in some cases as part of history and should not be forgotten.

A white man from Chicago I am friends with was very self righteous about taking down the Confederate monuments. I asked him why and he cited slavery. I asked him when will we start taking down all the monuments for Jefferson and Washington. He became rather agitated when I pointed out they owned slaves.

So do we completely erase American history? Do we ban Mark Twain? Do we censor art and history?

To me the answer has clearly always been no but there does seem to be a certain group of people that see past examples of racist or bigoted behavior and don’t view it in the proper context but believe it justifies current bigoted beliefs.

The confederate monument question is super easy, it's not complex like Washington & Jefferson - was the person primarily famous for rebelling against the US, fighting a war against it, in order so that he could continue to be a slaver?

The answer is yes for maybe 99% of them. (we don't even have to get into the fact that they were intentionally put up as symbols of oppression). Maybe you could argue some of the truly repentant ones get a second chance, but most of them weren't, I honestly can't think of a one. That's just an easy test to pass, really.

Also, nobody is saying you have to erase history, just stop forcing people to celebrate somethign that was openly evil. Should African american kids today have to go to Jeff Davis/Lee High School and cheer for the Rebels? God no, that's like making Jews go to Himmler High...it's just wrong.

That doesn't mean that you have to erase every reference to Bull Run from the history books. Teachign confederates as history is fine. Publicly venerating men whose primary notoriety is something both, then and now, was considered treasonous and wrong? Nope, we can stop now.
