    People severely underestimate what it takes to make an iphone, it's not just "cheap" labor but "cheap, skilled" labor. It's not just the cost of labor in America but the skills and supply chains that need to be developed.

    Diversifying Apple's manufacturing and taking advantage of India's production-linked incentive scheme (PLI) to steal business from China. Be interesting to see how Trump reacts with India wanting companies to relocate there instead of the US.

    Right - but then you're just dependent on India instead of China, which gives you the same basic problems. And India has a much weaker government - if this started there (and it very well could), it would have probably been far worse and much more out of control because they can't use the military and just quarantine cities of 10MM people by force.

    If anything, bizarrely, this crisis has shown that China is willing to do whatever it takes to keep manufacturing and supply chains running. For all the talk about being dependent on China for PPE, we've still been able to get PPE from China. The lack of supply was due to a global skyrocket in demand, not collapse of available supply. It's not like if we were producing PPE here or in India or elsewhere that any of those places would suddenly be able to handle a 50x increase in demand overnight either.

    This is all about China and Covid. I agree that China has shown it has a knack for keeping things running. However, Trump is a wild card who is already threatening to tax iphones made in India or outside the US. I think its clear this will be an election strategy, ultra nationalism. I'm sure part of investing in India is hoping to build a market in most populous country, but I doubt Cook wanted it to be like this.

    I think Tim Cook is doing his best trying to appease multiple leaders/countries. China will also retaliate against Apple if it significantly moves out and China is a major Apple market.

    India is just as corrupt as china. It has much worse infrastructure. Apple better be ready to bribe a lot of people.

    It might just be leveraging Trump and China to give more favorable tax breaks and rules. India makes sense long term as an expansion, but not as a place to "significantly expand" in "a hurry".

    Why does anyone in this thread give a ****? Seriously

    Nothing evil. India needs jobs more than China right?

    Edit: not knocking thread topic. I understand the supply-chain recent issue but it will take a real disaster to truly disrupt the global economy

    China is said to be ready to label Apple an ‘unreliable entity’ as revenge for a US ban on exporting US technology to the Chinese manufacturer of telecoms equipment, Huawei. This could see the Cupertino company face a range of obstacles to doing business in China.
    @dachuda86

    do I need to tell you how important Apple is to the US economy or the world ?
