yep, per CDC's own website the modern-day equivalent of 230k americans died in 1957-58 from influenza pandemic -- with no lockdown

There's no guarantee. I think the motivation for the world to find a vaccine is unprecedented given the kind of unprecedented damage this virus has been causing. I think we are going to see a huge amount of collaboration to try to make it work. Even that is not a guaranteed success. But it's hopeful.

I should add that short of having a vaccine, the second best solution is an effective treatment that either lowers the mortality rate and/or shortens the hospitalization time. That would be an acceptable condition to resume the pre-COVID life.

If both of those solutions fail, then we can pretty much kiss goodbye the life as we knew it.

There's a greater risk to NBA players of driving to the arena than there is of dying from COVID. It is not possible to have zero risk. That was never the intention, and it's not possible in this life. This is a disease of the elderly and an epidemic within nursing homes. We need to protect these specific people, and continue to isolate them. For all others, it's time to return to life. I hope people use data-driven approaches, and science, to analyze how COVID has impacted society. If they do, they'll quickly realize that the virus poses little risk to the working age population... and almost NO RISK to the young and healthy (NBA players and most fans).

    Bring back the NBA!

Is it really necessary for you to bring your misinformation from D&D and post it here? Notice that I was polite and called your post "misinformation," rather than what it actually is, a dishonest post.

I'm sorry you don't like the data so you attack me instead. It's not misinformation at all. It's the actual data.

I hope you have a great, safe day.

You are being dishonest. If you don't want to be called out on it, post that nonsense in D&D, where it belongs.

I am in no way being dishonest, stop with your baseless attacks. Read the data for yourself, friend. Respond to the data if you'd like, but please stop with your insults and attacks.

Based on a new analysis of state-by-state COVID-19 fatality reports, it is clear that the most underappreciated aspect of the novel coronavirus pandemic is its effect on a specific population of Americans: those living in nursing homes.

The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 affects the elderly far more severely, on average, than younger individuals.

But it turns out that among those who are elderly, deaths are concentrated even further among those living in nursing homes. This has implications for both the nursing home and non-nursing home elderly populations.

You are being dishonest. I could quote many instances of younger adults, even children, who have been made terribly ill, and worse, because of this virus, a virus we are still attempting to understand, but this is not the place for that. You haven't noticed?

So basically these diseases with no lockdown, spread out over years are about as devastating as this one with total lockdowns in a few months

It's just a flu, in other words.

This is not good argumenting at all.

Anecdotal evidence is very dangerous to set policy with... it misleads people like yourself who have no experience with statistics.

With a 0.3% death rate for people under age 34 with COVID, and 1.3 million known domestic cases, you'll have around 4,000 deaths for "young people". Statistically, this is a very low number, and far lower than many risks that we voluntarily ignore daily. Again, around 90% of COVID deaths had at least one comorbidity and half had multiple comorbidities (high blood pressure and diabetes being top 2).

Keep in mind the human population has a 100% death rate and on average we see around 8,000 deaths per day in America for all causes. Young people should by no means be quarantining - that will actually lead to more death than compared to them being out in public... as it delays community immunity.

I hope this helps you in your learning journey. Have a great day.

It's definitely a word. It's basically my word for what every internet turdburger who transformed themselves into an Epidemiology expert overnight does because they don't want to see Trump/Pence 2020 get wrecked in November.

Best of luck to these fine young men

Why are you only considering death rates?

An illness that can put a percentage people out of work for weeks or hospitalized is not something to consider, even though they won't die?

As a frame of reference, issues with the NYC metro, police force, EMT's, etc are happening because too many working age people are getting sick. Not necessarily dying, but unable to work.

my understanding is that such respiratory viruses are so incredibly contagious that it's near impossible to stop their spread, lockdowns or not. cuomo this week said 66% of their new cases were in fact people largely sheltering at home. the reason is the infection already begins spreading even before any symptoms show up, so even staying at home mostly isn't good enough. they should have stayed home and blocked off all outside contact altogether in order to truly stay safe. problem is that's not practical of course, especially to do it ~18 months waiting for a vaccine

It's not impossible in countries that are prepared and have good leadership. Second, the recent NYC transmissions are a sign of the lockdown being effective, believe it or not, insofar as spreading us intra and not inter household. Maybe you can say it means intra household transmission should now be attached by having quarantine hotels. Ok maybe? I don't know.

We were not and have terrible leadership, and a vocal minority of idiots who think wearing a mask when you go outside is the ****ing stamp act.

There's a reason why we have the worst response in the developed world, and it's generally idiots who say it's just the flu, that it will go away on its own, that 500,000 dead and millions seriously ill is acceptable or that it will 'save the economy" and a president who told us to drink bleach.

This is also the reason why these "restart the season' proposals are looked upon rather skeptically. It's touch and go for countries that have had a good response. And we are a basketcase.

LOL at trying to turn this political and blaming the federal administration instead of the New York governor who waited 3 months to clean the subways and released COVID positive patients back into the nursing home population.

Again, this is a nursing home and long term care epidemic. Treat it as such. It's absurd for the working age, healthy population to be scared of COVID - the data just doesn't support it.

NBA players are among the least vulnerable population (young + healthy). It's perfectly safe for them to return to the court. Manipulative guilt shaming of people who want to get haircuts, provide for their families, or simply go out in public without a mask on is totally wrong.

belarus' president instituted zero preventive measures, other than telling his people to drink vodka. they currently have 126 deaths out of 9.4M. belgium at the other end of the continent did as much as anyone to fight this thing and today has 8500 deaths out of 11.5M. so nothing seems clear to me w/ this erratic beast. some of the best performing countries (taiwan, hong kong, south korea) never even locked down at all. they had exceptional testing as well as screening of incoming travelers. but i've seen data showing their cases actually peaked before any of this was even instituted. so again, it's all quite strange w/ this virus..

Belarus got 22k infections, it is not like they went unscathed.

The viral strains for some reason weren't that lethal yet.

Maybe they drink vodka and use it as disinfectant as well.

They discovered people had lasting lung issues in Hong Kong so it isn't all that rosy.

Singapore was hit by a 2nd wave, still just had only 20 deaths to report and Taiwan and HK weren't for now.

I think you two are at the respective extreme of a spectrum.

The truth lies in the middle, try to balance it out.

And we shouldn't shrug off the lives of NBA players because they are young and fit.

We learned from DeRozan that certain players suffer from mental health issues, they must be scared af.

In other words, I want to watch ball but do not want sports ppl to suffer.

ya, in belarus' situation you'd expect them to have a high number of cases w/ no lockdown, but like i said it's strange they still had minimal deaths. actually that seems to be the case across eastern europe on the whole
