I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, TBH.

It's just sad that the nation doesn't have a healthcare infrastructure to cope with things like proper contact tracing and testing. At the federal level, we've made not much effort in two months to build that up properly. And we Americans are not a patient people (ouch, that pun). So, here we go.

A lot of us have known we're pretty much a joke compared to what we used to be as a country, but let's just try to rev the motocycle anyway and see how it goes! YEEEEEEEEEEEE---

Nobody should be forced into working under unsafe conditions. Profit at all cost, without enforcing safety procedures is inhumane.

As Workers Fall Ill, U.S. Presses Mexico to Keep American-Owned Plants Open

Multinational corporations with factories in Mexico have remained open, even after coronavirus outbreaks hit their facilities.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/30/world/americas/coronavirus-mexico-factories.html

The lack of testing in Mexico makes it difficult to determine exactly how many workers have contracted the virus, but in interviews, more than a dozen employees at foreign-owned plants said that their colleagues were falling ill on the factory floor.

Again.. The social distance and stay at home orders were never meant to absolutely stop infections. That's virtually impossible. It is to slow the rate of infection so that our medical system can handle it and buy more time to develop a vaccine and treatments.

Again we as a country simply don't have the will to do what is needed to successfully control this virus. We can talk about the science we can look at polls saying that most Americans approve of the social distancing measures and stay at home orders but we're seeing them weaken or get removed everyday now. We still are a society that really only values the short term and one where the loudest voices usually win.

This is why I keep on saying at this point herd immunity from natural infection is pretty much our only hope because we simply don't have the patience, will or resources to do anything else. I'm not advocating that. I'm not encouraging that and I certainly don't think it is a good thing but that's what I'm seeing we're at.

Maher is an idiot, so I didn’t watch.

But why do American Exceptionalism not look around and wonder why Taiwan has not gone into lockdown and still have succeeded so far? That’s real reality, not some strawman. Why do we not see our weakness, take responsibility and work the heck on being the very best? Why do we instead looks at strawman to rationalize our crappy response, behaviors and accept such lower standards and not expect more?

and why do we not see, given the technological leap we have been going through that we will one day get there - to contain diseases.... cause you know, we did eradicate polio the brute hard way when we have not nearly the tech capability that we have today and in the future

    it’s a loser mentality, that’s why

First rule in trumpism... never admit you were wrong, no matter how wrong you were, and how ridiculous it make you look now... btw, he is one of the people trump has appointed to lead the current response and recovery...

That's the new world order of the media. Sensationalize and mislead for clicks. Those that report the truth must apologize and redact or risk being outcast.

Problem is, this is most likely going to be like the flu, in that it is constantly mutating. Can we rely on herd immunity? It doesn't really work with the flu...

Yes is a very likely possibility but until we get a vaccine or very effective treatments I'm not seeing any other options. It should be obvious that every state that is relaxing or removing standards for stay at home orders have not meant the reasonable standards established by the CDC. On top of that many states haven't put in standards. We simply don't have the will to do what is necessary as a country to do what epidemiologist are saying needs to be done to fight this virus.

I agree completely. Just saying that we can hope for herd immunity, but the vaccine type measures should still be strived for. Until then, we need to be as vigilant as possible on not contracting this.

I just think we're too stupid and/or unwilling as people to continue to take proper social measures.
