That’s easy to say when you’re relatively young, although many have been hospitalized and some have died who considered themselves “safe.” What about the tens of millions of Americans who are in a high risk group? Old Americans like the two of us and our friends who are contemporaries? What about those who are younger than us but have conditions that put them at risk if they get Covid-19? Tough luck? Too bad you weren’t in the “herd?”
[Educational Post] Historians agree that politicians locking citizens in their homes is fascist, not those protesting the move. Hilarious and unintentional irony from Buck, a person with a very mediocre set of mental capabilities. GOOD DAY
Odd... I don't recall seeing trump, or any republican for that matter speaking out against a heavily armed mob going to the Michigan capital building in order to disrupt and intimidate....
Nope, not a peep or a tweet I guess it's OK if the governor is a Democrat, and the gunmen are white, and Trumpateers. The ending to this story might have included a few fatalities if the people branding weapons were black, or immigrants, storming the capital of a Republican Governor. Then, Trump would be tweeting up a storm about it, and praising law enforcement for protecting the Governor from dangerous criminals.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/counterprotesters-try-mute-message-stay-home-opponents-n1197391 Counterprotesters try to mute message of stay-at-home opponents "We’re not there to literally go toe to toe," said an organizer with the group Refuse Fascism. The demonstrations were planned in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Springfield, Illinois. In most cases, the people organized by Refuse Fascism plan to be near Reopen America protesters. In Chicago, a caravan of vehicles and a "a small group" on foot will be positioned near the Reopen America rally, said Refuse Fascism co-founder Andy Zee. "In a society where black people, Latinos, and Native Americans are already dying at disproportionate rates, who do you think will be sacrificed in order to re-open America and get the economy going again?" he said by email. Refuse Fascism rallies were also planned in New York and Chicago, cities without scheduled Reopen America events.
Peaceful protesters advocating for civil liberties. These people play a vital role in preserving American democracy. Notice how there was no violence yesterday? Sharp contrast to any group gathering of the, ahem, "democratic base".
Spoiler: Not on my lawn They certainly can't peacefully storm the White House with guns. Why is that? If you think violence wouldn't have occured upon those protesters from law enforcement if the protesters were armed and black, storming a capital for any reason, then you are living in a world wearing Trump branded rose colored glasses.
some governors seem to think they can lock law-abiding citizens in their homes with no income in perpetuity. Other realize they have to start opening up or there will be unrest. Not only are these stay at home orders constitutionally dubious, but more and more people will engage in civil disobedience as the lockdowns go on.
So when these gov say they are doing this for public safety and when they have a date for lifting restriction, to you they are not doing it for public safety and that the moderate lockdown is forever? I can see how that drive people nutz. People exercising true peaceful civil disobedience do not arm themselves and are willing to be arrested for their rights. People armed and ready for a fight are not doing that.
I'm not advocating for this but this is what is happening. Just look at how many states are relaxing standards or opening up. Look at how many states never put in standards. For example SD where the governor still refuses to put in stay at home orders even though they have one of the largest single clusters of infections in Sioux Falls. We have to face it but this country doesn't have the will to be able to do what is necessary to fight this disease. We squandered opportunities early on to address it when we could've without major lock downs, we're dismantling stay at home orders and as we seen when a beach gets open they get packed with people violating social distance. Our options for fighting it are severely limited when a fair amount of the population won't abide do what is necessary or as in the case of the protesters and many others doesn't even believe that it is that bad.
Not only is trump not speaking out against the armed mob, he actually goes back to the "both sides" argument in support of the heavily armed mob that stormed the MI statehouse
I remember when I was in Korea and worked with a Korean, we talked about the difference in Auto Insurance rates and how there's was so much less than ours (this was in 2005). In Korea, if they get in a minor accident, usually, they just trade info and take care of it without getting insurance involved because they know that if they get insurance involved in minor scrapes and dings, everyone's insurance will rise. In America, we see minor accidents requiring insurance to get involved and we end up having exponentially higher rates. That's why the Koreans have been able to combat and limit the spread within their borders much better than we have. They're already built for this as they know the importance of society and the community as a whole. There is a sizable contingent of selfish and entitled Americans that just aren't built that way and are basically screwing it up for the rest of us. Doesn't help that our President is one of those individuals.
Yes. We Americans just don't have the sense of community that other countries do. For that matter most Americans don't even understand the philosophical underpinnings of this country or even the what the concept of "freedom" means. You see that in how those protesting in MI brought out firearms because their view of freedom doesn't include the sense of collective security only what pertains to themselves.
