I didn't say anything at all was wrong with forced labor of inmates, it's done here in Texas everyday. What is true, is that it didn't work. What you're advocating for has already been shown to FAIL. As referenced in Georgia' HB 87. It wasn't just the low pay when most illegals left Georgia after this bill, it was lack of skill. If you want to pay farmhands more, you're making the costs of produce more, and if you want to take it to other industries that I mentioned, everything will costs more. Are you willing to pay more for essentially everything? Are you willing to start boycotting everything illegal immigrants have a hand in until your dream of illegal immigrant removal is obtained? If not, well you shouldn't reply anymore, because it would demonstrate that you aren't willing to do everything in your power to obtain this "dream" of yours and as a result, your credibility crumbles on the matter.
Have you heard of automation? When's the last time you visited a farm? You think strawberry pickers aren't already being sidelined by new machines that are costing less and less? The more illegals pile in the more trouble they'll be in down the road because of the inevitability of our technological progress. I'm doing them a favor while HELPING those already in the states looking for work WITH better pay. The more illegals that pile in, th emore they'll be exploited. The current batch will have no leverage.
So you're saying that Americans would do these jobs for more pay, and now you want to replace the Americans and illegals with machines? Even so, this is one of many industries that involve illegal immigrant labor. Exploitation is a state of mind. You & I, maybe we feel they are being exploited. To them, they have never had it so good economically, so you may feel you're doing them a favor, but they would believe otherwise. Again, when will your boycott start? Some people are perfectly fine with punishing the US citizen because ILLEGAL! I doubt they understand the process. Remember that the "punishment" here isn't about illegal or not-legal. It's about SSN. If your spouse doesn't have a SSN, you as a US citizen is barred from getting the $1200. You can be perfectly legal and not have a SSN. If you are here on a student or fiance visa and is not working, you don't have a SSN. If you are not working, you won't have a SSN until you obtain permanent resident status, a process with ton of paperworks, cost and can take more than a year dependent on how backed up the system was at time of application. Our immigration process is broken and no one care to fix it, but plenty love to complain and politicize it.. For example, if you are married to a US citizen (which means you can be on a path toward perm residency and citizenship) and applied for a green card, your visa might expire during the long process... if it does expire, some chooses to not leave because they believe they can legally do so (which they can in certain circumstances and cannot in other). In some cases, once it expired, it's better that they overstay and do the necessary paperwork instead of leaving (yes, there is even a legal process for that). It's a stupid mess. And with anything this complicated, it's easy to demonize ... ILLEGAL! Punish them!
Great post and fully agree our immigration system is broken. Stuff like denying US CITIZENS stimulus checks because of the status of their spouses isn’t doing anything to solve it and is just another sign of the ham handed vindictiveness regarding this Administration and others on this issue.

I'm watching the news and they're reporting that Indonesia and Pakistan are relaxing social distance regulations for Ramadan Prayers. They're showing pics of packed mosques with people shoulder to shoulder and most not wearing masks. You would think now would be the time to wear a Niqab... Not that I can travel right now but even if I could I would be avoiding Indonesia right now...
Honestly, those people are probably saying that about us, and not wanting to travel here. If you compare cases per million/deaths per million: US 2890/164 Pakistan 57/1 Indonesia 31/3 They are wrong to take that risk for a couple reasons, even if their numbers appear low. First, they aren't testing many, so numbers could be much higher realistically. We have tested way more people per million at 15,900, compared to only 248 in Indonesia and only 164 in India for every million people. We only had 9,032 cases March 18th, and today we are at 957,279 and climbing. It's almost hard to believe. Nobody would have thought a month ago than we would be adding 32,000 cases a day so quickly, and at almost a million so soon. They should look at us as an example of how quickly the pandemic can spread, and not take risks simply because they aren't seeing the numbers yet.
I just got a reminder from Microsoft about my departure flight for Dublin tomorrow. Thanks Microsoft for rubbing it in that my 5 week vacation should be starting tomorrow. Ugh, who knows how long it will be now. That vaccine can't come soon enough. I am going stir crazy for some beautiful scenery and carefree fun. I can't even get my hopes up for trying again next May at this point.
