No reason to think it's only for the duration of the crisis. The rationale that was offered didn't have anything to do with safety but to protect jobs for our GREAT American citizens.

Besides which, I'm sure the pandemic has not much stifled the desire of immigrants to come to the US. If there is a slowdown, it's from the bureaucrats.

I don't doubt this admin wants to do that. The focus now is not to distract from what's most important - this crisis. Wait till we are no longer in a crisis and hit back hard if this policy continues.

"even without this order, our Southern Border, aided substantially by the 170 miles of new Border Wall..."

In case there was ever any confusion over why trump is closing legal immigration... nothing to do with the pandemic.

The move has an 80% approval rating. So it's not just the GOP that likes it - most independents and some democrats.

If it can save just one life, then we should do it right? That's the new standard that the liberals have set.

His cult level supporters will be the last to know that he doesn't care about them or anyone else.

Well, I'm not really involved in any hitting, so no chance of either distracting from the crisis now nor policing policy later. I just heckle people from the peanut gallery. I'm just saying I don't like this order, I don't approve. I don't like his stated purpose nor his apparent intended purpose nor the dogwhistle purpose. But whatever. Our remedy for a bad president has already misfired. We've got one recourse left, which we'll try in November. If that doesn't work, God help us.

None of us here are involved in any hitting. Apology to those that are.

If this is a war, you fail when you get sucked into these shinny object of distractions.

This is an obvious PR move to fire up the base in a time when he is looking bad. Plain & simple.

"Hmm, this coronavirus isn't working out for me, Jared, what do we got to get the juices going?"
    "Umm, how about immigration?"
    "I love it!"

They care about their values and they want the country to be reflective of those values. They don't get it that Trump doesn't care about them or any of their values... until it's too late.

Trump shouldve asked a democrat to announce it. He needs to be smarter at some point.

Values are subjective and personal. I was not making a judgement on if they are good or not good. I’m merely suggesting a way to look at how someone behaves or what a person supports. It’s also important to note that values aren’t typical logical but more likely emotionally based.

the wall - possible options: I value purity, I value security, I value job...

Good piece here on how Trump is exceeding the powers of the president on this one:

Him announcing it to rile people up is the point though. It’s not like he has an actual plan or has actually tested the legality of the executive order or anything. This is all just a show to him, and his cult viewers. He does what he does on a daily basis because of his perceived “enemies” on the TV screen. Everyday he needs a new storyline for each episode of outrage.

I cannot wait for this bad tv show to get cancelled. Right now the REALITY sucks.

Trump's immigration order is not nearly as big as he let on. Only 2 months. And only people applying for permanent residency, and doing so from outside the country. Doesn't impact tourist or work visas, like H1B. With carveouts for healthcare workers, spouses and minor children of citizens, military, and others. Basically, this order doesn't do anything aside from perhaps evoking some head nodding from the white nationalist crowd.

I don't think it has much to do with jobs after all. The one population it does seem to be targeted at is sponsored relatives (aside from spouse and minor children) of naturalized immigrants. Looks aimed at the "chain migration" they think is so terrible. I still don't like it, for the record, even if it's so temporary and narrow. I expect he'll extend it later. Maybe he's setting it up to be a campaign talking point later.
