The Yulin festival still exists, sadly. But thankfully even most of the people in China don't agree with/accept it's existence, which is why I say that it's no longer accepted part of the culture, that's what I mean. Apologies for not clarifying my statement earlier!
There's already an animal thread so that other dude didn't have to post that here. it was offensive to show that without a spoiler. at least if it was a video you could choose not to view it. Keep up the good fight! Hong Kong Forever
I've been hearing about this and can believe it. The PRC in the last 20 years has been expanding their ties with Africa and as such has invited many Africans to the PRC. CCP rhetoric has been that they aren't racist like the West but the reality isn't what they project. There have been some ugly incidents. During the 2008 Olympics a nightlife district in Beijing tried banning black Africans but had to back down.
This is real. Please spread it. Please share it. Right now there are STILL people saying that it's a hoax, or justifying it by saying "Oh well it's not happening in Beijing/Shanghai/wherever else"--These arguments are COMPLETELY invalid. It doesn't matter where the discrimination is NOT happening, it matters that people who are legal residents of a supposed world-class city are being treated like trash, when they're contributing to the economy of both China and home. With enough exposure, there's no way for this bullshit to be swept under the rug (so that Guangzhou can say that it was made up by the outside later). edit: let me state that once again--those being discriminated against are LEGAL, RIGHTFUL RESIDENTS OF GUANGZHOU. They have every right to be there (if not more rights than some migrant workers that don't have resident cards).
One of the things about the treatment of blacks in the PRC is that attitudes towards blacks were improving in the last 20 years because of Steve Francis, Tracy McGrady and Stefon Marbury. A lot of Chinese saw how well Francis and McGrady got along with Yao, including Yao calling Francis his "Da Ge" (Big Brother). Marbury was also very popular and did a lot to endear himself in the PRC. That said racism has never disappeared and this crisis is likely reviving some ugly attitudes.
We could take the black African China expatriates all in as refugees, were you planning on suggesting that?
I can only speak for the people I know, but yeah, everyone from Africa that I've met can speak not only English but at least Chinese and another few languages as well. I think multilingualism is common across the entire continent, though. I'm incredibly jealous.
One thing that I did hear from a friend is that as a light-skinned black dude he gets by really well because everyone can see that he's "American" so to speak. But his colleague who's also from the US is treated differently because he's a lot darker (or more African-looking, as he puts it). I think despite a large portion of the population loving black culture and people in general, they see Americans and people from Africa in an entirely different light. It's unfair as hell, but colorism is definitely a thing in China.
That's..actually a really good question. Maybe they assume more people can understand written English as opposed to Chinese? Like I've worked in China for many years now and I still run into characters I can't read. And when I go to HK/Taiwan I can't read **** (they use traditional Chinese in writing though obviously there's English everywhere so I'm fine). Just a guess though.
Racism is cancer to a nation. It will only destroy the nation who have racism rather whom they are looking down. I hope Chinese government could look into this seriously. This is the time to fire up the propaganda machine to show political rightness. Chinese officials need to apologize publicly to the foreigners who are treated unfairly. Never be a government who ignore or even encourage racism.
Yes, but only at my gym. Usually everything is bilingual in Beijing unless directed specifically at English speaking people or just completely in Chinese.
Ethnic minorities and other Asians can confer... I'd visit but would never want to live there under the current mindset...
