I was thinking the same thing. I am skeptical of the numbers coming out of the PRC but I don't think there is some massive cover up. If they are relaxing too early or the actual numbers of infected are wildly out of sync with what they are doing it will become obvious.
I don't know the details of the lifting of the lockdown but it seems like it should be phased in. What happens in the PRC, good or bad, will be a lesson for the rest of the World to follow.
Honestly, I don't know enough about the recent numbers of new cases of the virus, but I don't believe their number of reported deaths at all. I've seen reports of people in Wuhan, interviews (as hard as they are to get, some have occurred) with family members having their relative cremated without their knowledge, then, after being told about it, being refused to allow the burial of that relative as both the dead and the family wanted. This is after they have arranged for a plot, an expensive stone, a modest Buddhist ceremony. Quite an expense for them. Instead, they are escorted by officials that insure as little notice of the burial as possible, several weeks after his or her death. They appear to be covering up the number who died in Wuhan, in my opinion. If the government of China is hiding the true number of deaths, it calls into question other reports coming out of China. I hope the huge decrease in new cases is true, of course. We'll see.
I don't get this cover up speculation. Hundreds of top Wuhan and Hubei's officials were all fired within a week. Why would the newly arrived officials hide the mistakes of someone else especially after the central government went all in for it? You know China has death penalty.... Also, Wuhan reported 4% death rate. That is high enough death rate to lock down the whole China. Cover up for what? The number is 3200 death for China......if it is a cover up then what would be the number you like? 13200? That's still less than the death in the US. We can ask ourselves what had happened to the US government, Italy government, UK, France...... Any official resigned or fired? Any protest? ....Nothing. If a democratic government are not punished or scared by that number after one or two more months of 'preparation', why would China need to cover it up as the first hard hit place? They fear people more? The early incompetence of local officials was sure there. It is the same as in the US for not testing people and many people died with flu. This is not cover up but incompetence. The cover up thing is more of an anti-China fuss or Trumper's dire last straw.

Trump's racism trumped Trump. He closed the border to China in early Feb. even without 'hearing any warning on virus', while left it open to Europeans when Italy was the epicenter. Racism kills.
China and the WHO downplayed it and let it spread. Trump wasn't perfect but he closed the border faster than a lot of places. Stop deflecting for you evil masters.

Whether China downplayed it is one thing, but there is definitely sufficient evidence that Trump and his administration knew just how bad this could be before the new of January. They chose to ignore it and downplay it in the media before changing their tune. Oh and also while downplaying it, the Republican Cronies were selling off their stocks by the truckload, further evidence they knew how serious this was. And then there's the funny side note of trump deciding this was serious and dimming up support of hydroxochloroquine, in spite of medical advice, because he had stock in the parent company. So, we can play a game of who lied worse if we want. The theme of the game will be that they're ALL bad for the people.
I'm all ears. New reports (CNN) say US Intel was tracking this since November. I don't believe that, because I don't think China knew about it in November. But it's funny, because someone here (can't remember if it was you or not, but I don't think so) told me our Intel in China wouldn't have been tracking this or simply wasn't there.
