It’s simply not derogatory despite what you think lol. “Bernie supporter” isn’t as fun to say. Call me a Joe bro if you want. I’ve never heard anyone imply it’s a negative term. It simply refers to ardent Bernie supporters; and that’s positive or negative depending on who you ask. It’s no different than the term Obamacare. It’s “derogatory” if you hate it, but Obama cites it as a badge of honor
It 100% is used as a negative term. Frankly, I couldn't give two ***** if the same people who use it didn't get butt hurt over anonymous tweets and then proceed to paint broad brush strokes on his supporters.
I actually looked on urban dictionary and you’re right. Refers to insufferable Bernie supporters. I stand corrected. If I’ve ever used it I’ve never had that intent, however.
Bernie Hos and Bros sounds more descriptive anyways... ...The more appropriate term to show disdain are the Bernie or Bust worshippers. The issue? Highjacked the Democrat Party and platform Claimed they serve "Democratic values" better Pretended "it's not their problem" by leaving it high and dry when they don't get their way.
Every Bernie supporter I've met so far is voting 3rd party or not voting at all in the general. I guess everything they preached about was all moral posturing and they never really cared about anything.
That's very unfair to say and I'm no Bernie supporter but what they want and what the moderate lane wants are vastly different. Can you blame them if they don't support the moderate cause when they are getting nothing that they want ? And now you want to berate them when they stick to their guns because they won't support your anyone but Trump platform. If you ask me , you have to commend them for sticking to their beliefs.
I disagree here. A vote that isn’t Biden is a vote for trump. And a vote for trump is not only diametrically opposite of what Bernie stands for, it’s just anti-America
What do Bernie supporters want, and of their choices (Trump, Biden), which do you think is more likely to move in that direction?
That's fine that they're sticking to their beliefs but don't pretend like you care about climate change when the other guy thinks climate change is a Chinese hoax or don't pretend that you care about class struggle when the other guy is cutting social programs and give rich tax cuts.
I didn't know that .... If your only care is getting rid of Trump - that's one thing , the difference in platforms is another altogether. Biden is a big part of what got us to where we are with wealth inequality and climate change during his many years in DC. He's no more going to give Bernie voters what they desire than Trump is. M4A , debt free college , college debt forgiveness , a raise in the min wage , guaranteed jobs , GND - None of that will happen with Biden and those are the things that are high on the Sanders supporters list. Why on earth should they vote for someone who isn't going to give them what they want ? If your sole answer is "to get rid of Trump" ..... that isn't good enough. To them , if you want their support in ousting Trump - Dems need to give them what they want. This is Armageddon for the Dem's - It could cause an irreparable split in the party and potentially create a new progressive party .... short term that's probably not great news for Dems or the Orange man bad narrative but long term they become the moderate wing flanked by extremists on both sides.
Biden was behind many of the most progressive efforts of the Obama Admin. He pushed for regulatory reforms of Wall Street following the 2009 bailouts. He pushed for the public option during the debates for the ACA. Even though that failed he was instrumental in in getting it passed. He pushed for same-sex marriage while Obama was still waffling on the issue. I've never liked Biden's personality but to claim that he isn't going to give Sanders supporters anything more than Trump doesn't match his history.
So you think Bernie supporters are equally good with more conservative justices all across the court system? Do you think that gets them closer to their goals?
A vote for Biden is only going to give the center democrats what they want there too. Independents - fiscal conservative / social liberals wont get their choices. Libertarians aren't getting their choice , neither will little l libertarians. Bernie / Warren types aren't getting some progressive. None of those groups are having it their way ..... but they are all suppose to jump behind the moderate dem candidate so they get what they want. And lets be honest here - All the progress made in the last 50ish years on race and social issues has been done with a majority of justices nominated by conservatives. And there's a long history of justices breaking from the majority - Even Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have already broken from their conservative majority on multiple occasions. That's the beauty of the lifetime appointment - they aren't bound to , by or for some political group - just their conscience.
are you phrasing this from a potential Bernie supporter’s perspective or are these your own thoughts? I have no reason to believe that a Biden administration wouldn’t embrace some of Bernie’s goals. Tackling climate change, reducing student debt, expanding universal healthcare; these are common goals in the Democratic Party. The party has shifted over time. And the hope with a Biden presidency as far as SC justices is that you get a Merrick Garland type sworn in. Someone who is fair and equitable. You don’t want trump appointing more justices, that’s doomsday scenario for social progress. Polarization has sharply increased and trump has a keen eye towards appeasing his base. You saw positive things happen from previous republican appointees because there was a silent understanding that SC nominees should be above partisanship. that’s beginning to crumble. Yes, qualified judges can and will continue to rise above the fray but it’s a continued risk I can’t see anyone left of center or far left would be willing to gamble on. Just my two cents
We're a big country. Bernie's positions might support what I believe are solid goals for America to aspire to, but there's a lot of Democrats in middle and rural America that have those goals in the lower rungs of their priorities. There's also critical questions Bernie hasn't fully answered on the execution and how impactful it could be for the people. There was an article in politico mentioning Minnesota turning Trump in non-urban centers because environmentalists are killing their prospects for mining. Socially, they agree to many of the things I normally agree with, but with no Dem candidate supporting mining in those areas, they're put in a hard spot of feeling abandoned by their party, and they are beginning to choose to listen to empty promises that may or may not pan out. Government is always slow and bureaucratic. Some of the stuff Trump has done is mostly to erode institutions and not obey mandates set by his predecessors. That's considered "progress" to his people because they (and everyone else) have zero faith in building institutions. Who has ever loved the new TSA under Homeland for anything, except we suck it up because we don't want to be screwed over by another paper cutter. The TSA is an easier example because it's designed to show us the government is there making us safe. Making cleaner water in, say Flint, is something we took for granted and bothered not to care whether people were on the ground to enforce laws passed when the water in Flint now was much much worse then. Notice how none of Trump's big ticket promises have actually passed with the exception of a relatively small refund check that paled in comparison to corporate buybacks. I guess the new NAFTA was another. The other better and beautiful trade deals were glued together pieces of the old and ugly obamanation that was TPP, which is why they were done quicker since the points were agreed upon and there was less to compromise with one partner country compared to 11. Realistically, Bernie passing one big law in one term would be a success. The rest of his platform, he'd maneuver around Executive Privilege as every other prez before him has done. Would his supporters accept that he couldn't deliver the moon and gave them an island? Maybe they don't know enough of politics to care and the grassroots withers away on the cold winter grounds of inauguration day. Just like Obama, for many of his supporters, the battle was won when he's sworn in. It was just the beginning. Not only does his supporters have to convince and mobilize the opposition, but also his own party full of regional interests that doesn't squarely match with theirs. Without that effort, you can't even consider winning the midterms.
