SARS was another example of China’s censorship. The outbreak started in Guangdong in 2002 but the government did not admit it and cover up the information until the virus got to Hong Kong in 2003 and spread it to other parts of the world.

What would you propose would have contained it on day 1? Every other country in the world had a month's advance notice of the possibility of it coming to their countries, testing kits already developed, plenty of information about the specifics of the virus and its symptoms/mortality/etc. And not a single one was able to do anything more to contain it once there were a handful of cases. What makes you think China could have done better with far less information?

1957 is not 20 years ago. The only pandemic in the last 20 years is this Covid-19 pandemic and the 2009 flu pandemic, which most likely originated in Mexico. Before that was the 1968 flu pandemic (originated in HK), the 1957 flu Pandemic (china), the 1918 flu pandemic (unclear origin - could be France or US). You can add HIV to that list. 2003 SARs outbreak was contained and did not become a pandemic.

Anyhow, the point remains... virus jump from animal to human from time to time. Then sometimes it mutual and allow human to human transmission. There isn't a current way to completely prevent this.

As I said before, in addition to pushing countries to reduce the chances of animal to human transmission, we should have strong global access and monitoring. Virus knows no border and thus the world should be able to globally monitor virus outbreak anywhere in the world at all times. We should not be solely dependent on any country, especially those that tend to hind info, to report it on their own. We did have something in place after Ebola that expired under this admin - we need something much better. Even if Covid19 is contained within the next month or two, the economic impact of Covid19 is so severe that I think we are going to result in real changes and one of the changes should be this. Each countries will also need to learn their lesson from this and beef up their capability to handle the next pandemic - it's going to happen again.

Really, your incessant focus on china is too narrow and too limited. The next severe pandemic could originate from anywhere at any time.

When I first saw this thread - and who the OP was - I totally dismissed it. But after reading the story of Dr Li Wenliang I realize that the worldwide economic collapse and 10,000s of lives are on Chinese hands. The historical record will bear this out.

China took a 1950s Soviet Union approach to solving a would-be pandemic in a 2020 world. Damn.

And then world leaders - who should've quarantined China and suspended international flights (at a minimum) on January 20th, kicked the can until late February, multiplying the time we are going to spend dealing with this.

And you still have mouth-breathers all over social media saying it's an illuminati conspiracy and the government is using too much force.

We humans have outgrown our ability to cope with the scale of society.

Also, I identify with some libertarian principles and have voted for libertarian candidates recently over the two major parties in state and national elections, but after seeing the response of most self-identified libertarians to this current crisis, I'd burn my card if I had one.
