Anectdotal evidence that I am going to extrapolate. . I live in a fairly well off, well educated blue urban area. I went over to Walgreens to get some trash bags just now and all the restaurants which are usually packed on Friday were maybe 50-75% capacity. Even the ones with cramped seating. It was disappointing. I am not optimistic. Italy curve looks more likely.
I am not in Houston, I am in Chicago. I checked with wife and we have not had an increase in flu deaths or anything similar. That does not mean that there will not be deaths but thus far the number of deaths are in line with what would be normally expected. I cannot speak for Houston or other areas but I have heard no indication thus far or either bed shortages or issues with flu or similar type deaths and usually when there is an uptick it is communicated quickly when it is something medically being followed. It also doesn’t mean that there will not be a massive increase in the coming days. However right now there they are all within the margin for error, at least for now.
In Chicago the last few days it has been more subdued and no one is partaking in small talk and restaurants have been fairly empty but I will be curious about this weekend. I have heard a lot of wealthy white people claim it is a media creation, and if bodies don’t start stacking up soon idiots are going to start gathering in large groups again.
The first deaths are sporadic and will be where the major clusters are. It will be the people with the oldest age and the worst health. Possibly uninsured and unvaccinated for the flu. It is the first signs and unless someone is checking the remains it is impossible to know. Spain realised that they had COVID-19 deaths in their hands like 2 weeks after the fact.
There are people in the USA that have died from it, just not very many, at least not in this region of the country. It is also possible it is taking longer for the virus to spike as quickly as in Italy.
Well I dont' know how the american system works. Most of my knowledge comes from movies and stuff and there I see that in some areas in america the person who performs the autopsies or determines the COD isn't even neccesarilly a doctor but is appointed? But I dont know. Are even autopsies mandatory when they are suspicious? Are they then free of charge or the family has to pay for them? Anyway I hope for the best.
Just a couple of these things would have swayed public opinion a great deal a few years ago, now it doesn't matter...the Teflon Con has his cult on lock.
Houston is not equipped like the majority of the country for this. I'd advised anyone to be looking at stocking up on medication needed like Tylenol/Motrin if you have prescription medication to ask your doctors to prescribe longer supply especially if you have health problems. It's already getting bad and when they start mass testing the number is going to look like their was an explosion. First responders and the hospitals are already seeing it and within a couple of weeks time they will be pushed to thier limits. I speak as someone in the field. This isn't fear mongering but if you have someone with health problems please tell them to stay away from large crowds and if they need groceries to buy online pickup.

That's when you say "I'm so sorry m'aam, just one second", and get down like you're tying your shoes, and then you loosen a wheel on her cart. Leatherman tools come in handy.
