Correct, all states have felony murder to some degree (as afar as I know). If you’re involved, you’re responsible for what can foreseeably happen. However, no, a getaway driver shouldn’t get the needle because his accomplice kills the bank teller. Here, it appears that Woods lured the cops in and when his buddy killed one of the cops he said “there’s another one” and the buddy proceeds to kill that cop plus another one. Woods later has drawings in his cell of him and other guy shooting cops, has song lyrics boasting about the shooting, etc etc. No remorse whatsoever and was proud that it happened.

there’s always a debate regarding the merits of the death penalty. I can see both sides and I don’t have a firm opinion on whether it’s justified...but when three lives are lost largely through the actions of someone AND they show no remorse whatsoever; it’s hard for me to say the death penalty is unwarranted

    Thanks for the link.

Assuming the testimony is true, I have no objection to Mr. Woods being found guilty on the charges he was convinced of. I personally object to the death penalty, but the law was probably accurately applied here. Again, assuming the testimony was true, it looks pretty bad for the guy.

    Highlights:
    -GF testified that
    A) He was armed and said he was waiting at the apartment in case the police came back
    B) He and the other guy discussed killing the cops if they came back, which she didn't take seriously
    -Surviving Cop Testified
    A) Woods said "You can't get me!"
    B) Ran back into the apartment after they showed him the warrant for his arrest screaming that he had no warrant out on him

The testimony is pretty damning that he was fully aware of what was about to happen.

The other guy (Spencer) definitely was about it. Without knowing him personally, Woods seemed like he was all talk and may not have actually shot the police on his own accord. His attitude during and after the murders were probably genuinely rooted in a distrust of police and based on his previous arrests. I understand the disdain for police but at the very least Woods recklessly disregarded the value of human life when he knew his buddy was armed and was at least threatening to shoot them if they entered. Whether he KNEW Spencer would open fire is a point of speculation, but he was nonetheless acting with a “depraved heart” as they say.

so yeah, you could argue that Spencer is more deserving of a harsher penalty than Woods...or you could say that Woods deserves an equal punishment if we think a triple homicide is truly deserving of the death penalty. There are a lot of gray areas but I can’t bring myself to feel much sympathy in this case (compared to others I’ve read about)

I hear you, and part of me wants to agree, but I'm talking few and far between when there were multiplayer let credible witnesses or video or something in that sense where there is absolutely no question on it.

side note I do think the evidence is lacking. They at least need a murder weapon.

Also cops can plant evidence so....

Thanks Justtxyank and Jazers100 for the clarification on this...I don’t think the media once let these facts be known that I saw. It definitely changes the look of this man...strange that they basically went out of their way to withhold this kind of information.

Didn't suit the narrative to give all the facts .... They were trying to paint a specific picture with those words. I'm sure many people bought that hook , line and sinker.

In theory I support the death penalty .... public hangings and all.

In practice , I don't particularly trust Man to do the right thing. In these kinds of cases , personal ambition often gets in the way of justice.

Honestly , I'd rather see the death penalty done away with and incarcerate them for life , or exile them to .... Iraq or Afghanistan.

    Lured the cops in?

You are making a huge leap here.

What are you basing this on?

running in and out of the house yelling "you can't get me" and saying "if you come in here we'll f*** you up" debatable whether that's luring someone in, but if it was shown that he knew his buddy was waiting with a rifle when he ran into the house upon the cops making entry...certainly doesn't help Woods' case. Is this the textbook case of when the death penalty should be used? No. Did Woods assist in the officers' deaths? Somewhat/sort of. Show any remorse? None at all.

More than likely, the State put on testimony from the family members of the deceased then showed Woods' boastful pictures and song lyrics of the killings. I'm sure the jury got caught up in the callousness and cold-heartedness of that. Woods was executed for his lack of remorse. Is that fair? Idk. That's a tough philosophical argument.

    1) Earlier in the day he was armed and told his girlfriend he couldn't go out with her because he needed to stay in case the cops came back
    2) He and the other guy said IN FRONT OF HIS GIRLFRIEND that they would kill the cops if they came back (she thought they were kidding)
    3) When the cops came back he allegedly yelled at them to come and get him, kept yelling obscenities, telling them to take the badge off and come face him, etc. and then when they finally went to arrest him he ran down the hallway and the first cop got shot from behind by the other dude who was hiding.

Seems to me you are using events that fit your narrative.

IMO that's not luring anyone in, luring would have been inviting them in and we only have what the police said and this from a police who took his badge off to lure him into a fight.

The only way did Woods assist in the officers death was "luring" them in and this is only supported by the police and why if the guy was laying in wait did he not start shooting until Woods was detained?

So its not known if his buddy was laying in wait yet you think the death penalty should be in play?

    Not understanding this logic.

I don't think we should have the death penalty at all so I'm not advocating for that here, but I definitely reject the narrative that was pushed that he did nothing wrong.

If you take the testimony of his girlfriend, the witness there who told the cop to put his badge back on and the cops, he was absolutely an accomplice.

So you believe everything the police and their witnesses say?

So saying they would kill cops and shouting obscenities and challenging a fight is now guilty of death?

Woods was already in custody before they got shot it was not while he was running down the hall, this was not when he was running down the hall.

    Did you miss that?

I still don't know what any of this has to do with him getting the death penalty.

Well we don't really have a reason to assume that the defendant's girlfriend was lying do we?

You are right that they had him in custody. He also told them if they came inside he would eff them up. So he was threatening the officers, he told his girlfriend he was waiting for the cops...

Again, I'm not for the death penalty. I don't think he was wrongly convicted though.

Looking at the history of how these things usually are done I can have a lot of doubts about the testimony of the girlfriend.

So once again I ask even if the what the girlfriend said was true and he was threatening to beat up officers how does that equate to the death penalty?

Why do you keep asking me that when I've already said I'm against the death penalty?

not trying to be rude, but did you read my comment? I assume he got the death penalty from the lack of remorse afterwards. Woods drew a picture of him and Spencer shooting three cops. Not only does it show lack of remorse, but it shows that he may have been closely involved with how it all went down. If we're solely talking about the events that transpired on the day of the shooting, I would be against the death penalty and the murder conviction would be difficult as well. We weren't at trial though. It's not really our place to question the credibility of the girlfriend as you have been doing. Juries are the sole fact-finders; they heard her testimony live.

I guess we agree on much of it but it seemed before that you thought the facts of the case merited the death penalty.

I do think it is very much our place to question the credibility of the girlfriend when we hear over and over again about witnesses are coerced to go along with the states narrative.

But this is all a matter of opinion.
