The strains in a virus is simply a tiny tiny little difference in a gene that makes the new strain to link better with the ACE receptors. It isn't like they have become diferent species. Anyway the study was made in China so likely the L strain but there is no data about it. It wont make much of a difference anyway.
The growth factor chart is pretty interesting on this page: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-cases/#daily-cases Anything above 1 is growing, anything below 1 is in decline. The cases excluding China have been hovering ~1 for the past week. It doesn't even include the March 10 new case numbers which were in decline from yesterday. I think that is why the WHO is pushing so hard...we're very close to pushing this thing into decline if we can just come together and get it done.
No, but it reduces the contagion, which is the whole point of social distancing. It's not an either/or thing. You do less of it, and it will spread less - exactly what we're seeing in Japan.
Sure you dont touch noone and avoid it for a whie and then you go in the toilet and you get infected. The only way to delay is detection. What has Japan done? Until a couple of days ago the test wasn't covered from national insurance. So Doctors had to get approval to spend public money and turned the patients away. Thats why their number of tests is very low. The country who says it can check 3.800 people a day has checked a pittifully low number of people. When you don't check you also don't have positives.
I hope this is correct but I still worry we have a measurement problem. If cases are actually rising exponentially but our ability to measure new cases is not (and it's not in the US), then you would see these curves start to flatten out a bit. Anyway, we'll see. It is true that as a greater % of people actually take it seriously and wash their hands, that could greatly reduce the Ro value.
Interesting thing. Japan has this drug. Camostat mesilate. https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/german-researchers-covid-19-drug/
They also use this : https://www.wsj.com/articles/japan-...g-despite-danger-of-birth-defects-11583492886 Everyone is just trying things and see what sticks. Hopefully something sticks soon.
here's so facts on testing capacity Polis said health officials are working to expand the state’s testing capacity. The state has 900 test kits (each contained 1,000 tests) for the coronavirus, but Polis said he asked Vice President Mike Pence for more testing kits on Monday. State officials on Monday said they had so far tested 184 people for COVID-19. The state lab has the ability to process up to 160 tests a day. So far, the state has run far fewer tests than that each day. For example, between Saturday and Sunday, the state conducted 83 tests. Due to Supply, here's the criteria for being tested ... you need symptoms plus contact with a confirmed COVID-19 person or symptoms plus travel or severe acute symptoms Spoiler: full text of criteria So why isn’t the state conducting as many tests as it can handle? Supply. “We have a limited number of tests,” said Jessica Bralish, communications director for the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. “We have to prioritize the ones that meet the criteria.” The criteria the state has set for getting tested in Colorado are very specific. One of these scenarios has to be in place: The patient has a fever OR signs/symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath, AND the patient has been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19, within 14 days of when symptoms started. The patient has a fever OR signs/symptoms of lower respiratory illness (and other diagnoses such as influenza have been ruled out), AND the patient recently traveled to parts of the world where infection rates are high or community spread is occurring, within 14 days of when symptoms started. The patient has a severe acute respiratory illness (e.g., pneumonia, ARDS) requiring hospitalization AND without an alternative explanatory diagnosis (e.g. influenza).
Despite hiccups, global testing has ramped up exponentially, so any level off is a good sign. Not to say it can’t ramp back up
I work for a local health dept, and fun fact, restaurants routinely get violations for handwashing. That won't be the answer to this.
I've been tracking the numbers of cases without China and Iran (because they are completely fake) since Feb 29. As of my last update we have a little more than doubled since March 5 for active cases. Deaths have also more than tripled during that time and the previously low mortality rate has jump from 1.64% to 2.87%. I wish we had some better demographic data like @malakas showed with the vast majority of deaths in Italy being over 70 and most over 80.
is this the 1st containment zone Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) on Tuesday announced schools, places of worship and other large gathering spots within a one-mile zone of the city of New Rochelle will close their doors for 14 days, and National Guard troops will help deliver food and disinfect common areas inside the zone.
Damnit, what about my trip to the Rocky Mountains/PikesPeak/etc. But in all seriousness and forgive my lack of knowledge on declaring a state of emergency, but doesn't this give them the power now to close public places. And that would include the national and public parks like Garden of the Gods Park correct?
Do evangelist or protestant churches in america share communion? Except from siting next to each other what are other pracitces that spread germs? Sorry I have no idea. Here religion has reared its ugly head. The church has decided to go against science and is insisting that communion is holly and can't hurt the people if THEY BELIEVE ENOUGH. I am afraid you will too have some problems with the religious nutjobs.
I don't know what triggers authority to quarantine/close public areas, but counties and municipalities have that power, too. A county public health agency can close schools and public areas when necessaary to protect public health. Doesn't require the Governor to be a micro-manager. That said, maybe closing a National Park or National Forest would require more than a Mayor or County Judge, but I know the Governor can for sure. I mean, happens almost every year here due to forest fires. btw and fwiw: we are up to 13 states with governor-declared State of Emergencies. I think Governor Polis is being aggressive, and just doing the right thing, due to the amount of travelers in the state.
