it’s just staying the exponential course, give or take some countries’ (ahem!) inability to measure the spread properly.
It was stagnant for a while, China's cases exploded and then slowed so much that they are getting significantly more recoveries a day than new cases. How China did this, I have no idea. It's probably ****ery afoot when it comes to their reporting. I was hoping that maybe other countries knowing about this virus, would be able to peak like China did, as Korea has flirted with, but clearly with Italy, Iran, Spain, France, Germany etc (and the USA when our testing comes through) it looks like this won't be the case.
Everyone talking about those people who are 60+ but what about those who are just about to turn 59? (Asking for a friend.)
If they contract it, theyll be stuck in limbo- the good news is they wont die from it. the bad news, theyll have to deal with it for the rest of their lives.
Probably too long of a tweet thread to post, but worth the read for a good view of things from the ground in Italy. I don’t watch TV news. Are they showing any footage of the madness going on in these hospitals?
Good morning I found Italys statistics. 8% of hospitalised are UNDER 50 From the dead: 10% 60-69 yo 31% 70-79 yo 44% 80-89 yo 14% over 90 In the worst hit Lombardy region hospitalised in critical condition: 22% over 75, 37% 65-74, 8% 25- 49 Bat **** crazy. I need to lock down my parents and throw away the key
Here's threadreaderapp unroll link https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1237142891077697538.html From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy: ‘I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do. First, Lumbardy is the most developed region in Italy and it has a extraordinary good healthcare, I have worked in Italy, UK and Aus and don’t make the mistake to think that what is happening is happening in a 3rd world country. The current situation is difficult to imagine and numbers do not explain things at all. Our hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity We’ve stopped all routine, all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes. There are hundreds of pts with severe resp failure and many of them do not have access to anything above a reservoir mask. Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, I’m saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed. My friends call me in tears because they see people dying in front of them and they con only offer some oxygen. Ortho and pathologists are being given a leaflet and sent to see patients on NIV. PLEASE STOP, READ THIS AGAIN AND THINK. We have seen the same pattern in different areas a week apart, and there is no reason that in a few weeks it won’t be the same everywhere, this is the pattern: 1)A few positive cases, first mild measures, people are told to avoid ED but still hang out in groups, everyone says not to panick 2)Some moderate resp failures and a few severe ones that need tube, but regular access to ED is significantly reduced so everything looks great 3)Tons of patients with moderate resp failure, that overtime deteriorate to saturate ICUs first, then NIVs, then CPAP hoods, then even O2. 4)Staff gets sick so it gets difficult to cover for shifts, mortality spikes also from all other causes that can’t be treated properly. Everything about how to treat them is online but the only things that will make a difference are: do not be afraid of massively strict measures to keep people safe, if governments won’t do this at least keep your family safe, your loved ones with history of cancer or diabetes or any transplant will not be tubed if they need it even if they are young. By safe I mean YOU do not attend them and YOU decide who does and YOU teach them how to. Another typical attitude is read and listen to people saying things like this and think “that’s bad dude” and then go out for dinner because you think you’ll be safe. We have seen it, you won’t be if you don’t take it seriously. I really hope it won’t be as bad as here but prepare.
It's not so weird. China implemented quarantines and isolated a huge part of the population, implemented every day mask wearing and extreme tracking of contacts. With all that it is only natural that the RO would fall. What have these other countries except Korea done to limit the spread? Almost nothing. Now that it is in the whole of italy they quarantined Milano and it has only been 1 day. Perhaps in 2 weeks from now we will see some results.
1%. For example one of the doctors who died, she was 57. But there is noone in hospital or dead under the age of 25.
China is working because isolation will lower the rate. Korea is working because they started early instead of China, it waited a month before isolating cities. One of the advantage we have is our sanitizing, trash collecting is best compared to other countries. I've seen too many rules with employees must wash their hands before work. I doubt you see that in most countries. We have too much social media that this will help us unlike China where news are filtered. China internet likely aren't getting clutchfans because we speak too much on the Rockets. In 2 months, I should be seeing this at the bottom of the page.
So Italy is using age as triage. If that's a possibility for us, need to have that public conversation first. Otherwise, a few will have to make those decisions on their own criteria without the approval of a democratic society. Ethics, you know.
