Former Republican French argues that it would have been better for the US to just leave than to give the Taliban the deal they did. https://time.com/5794643/trumps-disgraceful-peace-deal-taliban/
When the us leaves the Taliban will probably take over. What a pointless war. Hopefully we take all our weapons out.
fwiw: the thread topic is the plot of Homeland Season 8 — a peace deal with the Taliban. It really is amazing how Homeland just nails current events, months before they make mainstream news
Another foreign policy success for Trump!: North Korean disarmament Trade war - simple and easy to win Iran totally contained Allies respect us Syria in great shape Jared peace plan Mexico paid for the wall
I haven’t caught up on this. Question .... are any of our allies with us in the region signing any type of agreement/treaty or is this just another Kim Jung type photo op with no real agreement?
This agreement was made without the Afgan's gov'ts involvement. Part of the agreement is that the Taliban would get 5,000 prisoners released which they are now demanding, and the Afghan gov't has already said no way. Also, remember that Republicans were up in arms when Obama traded 5 prisoners for an American POW. But 5,000 for nothing? No problem! https://www.salon.com/2020/03/10/tr...again--and-this-time-republicans-take-notice/
My gosh, military and foreign policy strategy from the other idiot son. btw, General Ben Hodges is the former Commanding General for the United States Army in Europe.
Huh...you mean Trump and his administration lied again? Who would have thought? https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/01/politics/un-report-taliban-al-qaeda/index.html UN report says Taliban is maintaining relations with al Qaeda despite deal with US
Reviving an old thread given the latest circumstances. I would love to see the behind the scene work toward this deal and especially why the Afghan gov was left out. Did the US conclude that no deal would be possible if they were involved? Or that it didn't matter, the Afghan gov would fail anyway? I'm now thinking both. That our military brass knew and our political leader didn't have the will to pull out until American altitude toward Afghanistan war turned extremely sour.
Well, this went almost exactly like the script. Biden administration could have done better by reading this thread than listening to the intelligence community.
Interesting to read this thread. Usually we're just talking out of our asses, but so many posters called it on this one.
