The USA has only tested 470 people?? What kind of joke is this? That's why there is no "outbreak" ? Don't tell me you have to pay to be tested out of your own pockets?
I'm not sure what the exact procedure/billing will be, but if it's like everything else... That could be a reason, or they're just not giving numbers yet... I would think they're not cheap unfortunately.. Supposedly right now though it's lack of kits
I dont believe the lack of test kits, this is laughable. Greece has tested 570 people, some 2 times. Population 11 millions. Don't tell me that a small country like this can find test kits but USA can't.
I was informed earlier today that my city's hospitals don't even have test kits. We--the general public--can apparently now get kits from our local Department of Health during normal business hours though. I'll call to confirm it tomorrow and find out what the requirements are.
I honestly don't know about our standards over here, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's downright stupid - ie going bankrupt over medical bills

[/QUOTE] Holy ****, yeah, this is about what I expected.. If the virus isn't as high - let's say 0.5% to be optimistic on mortality... And we aren't prepped, then how the hell are we going to be ready for a serious threat?
Wait a second. You don't only have to pay to be tested during a PANDEMIC but also pay for a government mandated quarantine? Are you serious? I don't want to speak about the american healthcare system etc but THIS here right now is worse than 3rd world countries. How is it possible to contain anything if you have to pay to be tested and to be quarantined? Is everyone able to pay 2000$ like it's nothing?
Yes. With tax cut refunds. But only every 4 years with republican president. So vote Republican. Or Die.
Listen this doesn't have to do with politics. Virus doesn't care if you are a democrat or republican or a socialist or a nazi. This is public health 101. Containment requires some simple measures first and foremost prevention and then DETECTION and isolation of infected people. How are you going to do anything like this? I dont' know what to say..if it's like that what's the difference between say Iran and the USA? Iran has probably done already more tests The rich are fine and the poor suffer and many die? But before they die they will infect the rich too. This isn't politics this is simple logic.
Yeah, it's a mess, ideally you want an emergency fund (also good work insurance) to avoid debt. Unfortunately I know a lot of us are not and I'm not even close to 1%, the wealth disparity here is a cluster f.... I worry about the ones that don't have some money/insurance. You're absolutely right it's a mess here, when I saw the guy who was forced quarantined and then had to pay I had a bad feeling... States and WHO are pushing for free kits so we'll see.
Yeah, it's a sad situation in some cases. I've even seen technically richer families eat through their retirement on health emergencies. Like obviously we can goto the hospital with/without insurance but it needs to be emergency, so technically can be turned away unless you have insurance. Obviously there are programs and insurance options but the cheap ones can be lacking on coverage. It's definitely gotten a bit better I think but nowhere close to what it needs to be.
Yep. My grandparents had a modest but successful business with locations in three states. When my grandfather (who was in his early sixties) had a heart attack, they lost their business and home. A big part of the reason why was medical bills. Our healthcare system is something. I pay almost six times for healthcare now than I did 15 years ago, for less coverage each and every year. And I'm very thankful, too, because I'm paying a small fraction of what many older individuals with pre-existing conditions pay.
