I don't think it's a surprise looking at it now, the two highest name recognition candidates in a highly fragmentary vote were able to more or less leverage their name recognition - a high floor was their biggest asset. The only thing that's somewhat surprising is that Bernie recovered from his heart surgery so quickly. In a 3 person race, Warren does better (I can't imagine Biden making paying for Medicare for all a focal point to sap her momentum the way Mayor Pete did, for example) but it's probably too little, too late at this point. She's still the most impressive IMO in terms of presidenting. I do think the process is super ****ed up, it's supposed to empower smaller candidates but they ended up canceling each other out. Caucuses are a shitshow, still. The whole thing needs to be torn up and started from scratch (sorry Iowa) At teh end of the day, with this stupid process, I think everybody would have been better off if the 2 near octogenerians had gracefully passed the torch rather than sucking up the oxygen of everybody else, but...privilege gonna privilege, and #bluenomatterwho when Trump is one the ballot.
Just for grins, if Biden picks Amy and wins, the Governor of Minnesota would presumably pick someone to fill her seat. Amy's term doesn't end until 2024. Do I have that right? Oh, and he's essentially a Democrat, being a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
There is no question Pence was a smart pick, he stays out of the lime light, avoids controversy AND won over the religious voters. I suppose with Biden.... the question becomes, does HE wrap up most of the moderate and older voters AND which is a bigger concern, losing some of the more moderate voters or losing the more radical democrats. I suspect the more radical democrats but time will tell. For Biden I think having a smart, strong and stable female would be a good contrast to his shoot from the hip low information strategy.
I think this primary has shown that most people, even on the left, don't care about identity politics. I know I don't. I mean the final three left standing are two old white dudes and one old jewish guy. The minority candidates, Kamala, Booker, Castro, were eliminated pretty quickly too, like they never even had a shot at it, it was so bad for them that I wonder if they will even consider it again. But for that reason, maybe Castro, there were rumors Biden considers him as well. Whoever it is has to make up for where he is weakest. It can't be a Tim Kaine like choice.
Morbid and absurd isn't it? Still..... with what we have seen over just the last 25 years, anything is possible...... we have had a President cheat on his wife while in office..... a VP that wanted too much from massage therapists..... a President that half the world wants for war crimes....... a President that was a television star.... the most traditional President has been the black guy named Hussein.
Well... predictable after a certain point. Predictable a year ago, or even 18 months ago? Not so sure. Most of it is candidates own self doing, I guess. I would have liked to have seen better campaigns run by the likes of Swalwell, Castro, and Harris. If Beto could have taken out good ole Ted Cruz in 2018, I think there's a much higher chance he'd still be standing right now. In either case, predictable or not, it's still "amazing"
White liberals care A LOT about diversity of gender and race on the ticket. I think picking a black woman is more important to satisfy liberal whites than it is to satisfy black people.
Catherine Herridge has been covering this story pretty much non stop since before her switch from Fox to CBS.
538's latest model: Basically the number 1 projection in their simulations has Bernie with a slight lead in total delegates at the end of the race over Joe Biden, but neither with a majority. We go to a convention with Bernie less than 100 votes ahead of Joe.
I laughed at this because I'm sure it's true. I do think Stacey is a good choice though but if it is Biden/Beto I don't think anyone is going to not vote because of Beto and it being two white guys. I guess the one fear for having Beto on a ticket, bigger than a two white guy ticket, is his stance on guns is pretty hard...and I tend to agree with the strategy that Democrats should stay away from riling up fears about the 2nd amendment, just don't think it is a hill they should die on right now. Beto saying "Hell yes we're going to take your guns!" is not going to play well in some places.
I can’t LITERALLY say that but he addressed someone who raised their hand when he asked if Trump’s tax cut helped them. Joe’s message was that it’s not helping the lower/middle class. Thus, when someone raised their hand he was addressing them as someone who is likely wealthy. It’s deductive reasoning and you know I’m right. The goal of that tweet was to paint Joe as someone who will either a) raise taxes on everyone or b) make continued gaffes because he didn’t say what he meant. neither of these things are true and you’re ignoring the context to make troll posts.
Not at all surprising. At least he's kept his seat in the Senate, the best place for him. Decent guy, terrible choice for VP at the time.
This primary will be won by whoever can get whites women to vote for them. Thus far, this demographic has been split between Klobuchar, Pete, and Warren. So Bernie and Biden need to pick a VP that shores up this voting bloc. I get why most of you think that a women of color would balance the ticket. But I think that picking Pete or Amy as the VP is the move here. Here’s my case: voting bloc is complementary to Biden’s Due to Biden’s age, you want a VP who can step up to the mantle Biden’s ground game and organization has left something to be desired. Pete’s team is particularly adept - getting Lis Smith and Pete’s network of volunteers (myself included) would be huge Biden lost his son and Pete lost his dad very recently. The surrogate father-son relationship would be such a feel-good story Biden has acted as a bridge for one historical presidency in Obama. He has an opportunity to do the same for another (first gay man eith Pete, woman with Klobuchar) Biden performed poorly in Iowa and NH. If you get Pete, you have a ticket that has been first or second in every race
