Somebody told me it was flooding in Houston, and I was like "wth, I didn't even know it was raining hard". I looked it up, saw this, and said "you've gotta be kidding me".

This had people in the Med Center and downtown all in a tizzy this afternoon. I rode the bus home and I've never seen it so packed: the aisle was completely full with people standing.

Because a water main broke? Seriously? Damn. We sometimes have flash floods in Austin, but not water main floods. I just hope my hometown can manage to mostly stay above water. I have relatives and friends there. Buy a bucket! Buy two! Heck, buy a ladder!

And the Astrodome 'needs' to spend public money to be renovated to stay upright?

The data in that link is kind of skewed (as it tells you in the first paragraph). Property taxes can be REALLY high in Texas.....but they’re assessed and collected at the local level.

It's interesting how the media spins this.

The water main didn't just break on its own - someone broke it.

The pipe responsible for the boil order was installed 35 years ago. It broke open just before noon when a city contractor began digging to repair a “gradual leak” on the water line near Clinton Drive and East Loop 610, officials said, causing water to bubble onto the neighboring highway.

    ...

Houston Public Works officials identified the contractor involved with the broken pipe as Harper Brothers Construction. A woman who answered the phone for the Houston-based company put a reporter on hold for 10 minutes before disconnecting the line. Additional calls were rejected and the firm’s website was later inaccessible.
