No what you did do is down play Russia’s actions and saying it was because of the US’s Actions that he decided to get revenge. Again this is not about revenge and to try to imply it was US’s own doing really shows how far you would go. Are you more sympathetic to Trump as you would to try and justify it was Putin's motivations against the US that caused Putin’s disinformation campaign?

 

What specifically started in 2016? Russian meddling in the 2016 election, there was no 2014 election to meddle in? US/Russia had a different relationship in 2012...

But Russia was meddling in Ukraine's elections before then and have been meddling in elections all around the world for over a decade now.

So I think it is safe to assume that he's not doing this out of revenge or to punish us. He's a former intelligence agent and its his strategy that this is the best way to get more power for his country by trying to prop up people he believes will either outright assist Russia or will do Russia the least amount of harm.
