Okay, then Bernie isn't a communist (or socialist despite the self-imposed democratic socialist label) and you should probably quit inferring that he and his supporters are. What Bernie supports, by policy and rhetoric, is a social democracy, and a mixed economy. And I agree with you, it's by definition impossible to have communism or socialism without state/communal control of the means of production. It's like saying you can have capitalism without private ownership. It just not possible.
I find that communists tend to support him. This is not some secret. And he flirts with communism and socialism too often for my comfort man. You vote for him all you want. Best of luck if he is your pick.

People like to own things. Also the implementation requires a demonization of a group or groups to mobilize the violence needed to take over everything. These are death tolls directly related to communism but likely underestimates. Communism uses a nice face to sell its ideology but is nothing more than a coat of sugar to hide the poison within. Dreams of utopia are too good to be true. Be wary of someone promising you they will fix everything... left or right.

That implies that the long term goal indeed is to eliminate private corporations. In other works so called "Democratic Socialism" is really just plain old socialism they just realize it will take longer to implement. The plan appears to be to regulate and tax businesses to death before the government taking full control.
Bernie doesn't make the laws congress does. I don't think he is going to able get many things passed unless he wants to be like trump and just not care about the law.
What's going to end up happening here? The DNC knows that Bernie won't beat Trump because so many democrats will simply stay home (many moderates, fiscal conservatives, Christians, blacks). Will there be a consolidation play among Bloomberg, Biden, Pete and Klob's voters? Them banding together likely is the only path to keep Bernie from getting it.
