Given that it made national news I feel it's not crazy to make a thread about it.

It's such a striking incident and upsetting on many levels. IDIOT

While you feel this is an issue of political correctness, I think it's an issue of how our society is developing a greater tolerance for open racism.

This isn't about being offended, it's a more worrying sign of a direction this country is heading and worthy of debate.

You are certainly free not to participate and ignore this thread you know.

It has nothing to do with political correctness.

It has much to do with confirmation biased.

But again, you're just trolling. Nothing to see here.

I guess the thrust of my objection is the way these local stories get on the national news. It's not relevant to people in Texas or California or Kansas that some parent in Michigan is racist. It's akin to the if it bleeds it leads sort of prurient reporting. For the people of Ann Arbor, it might be newsworthy. For everyone else, it's just gawking.

I disagree. I think racial tensions are the highest they have been since the civil rights movement and these types of things were not happening 4-5 years ago. There's an emboldeness that hasn't been witnessed before. It's deeply troubling

I disagree with your disagreement, lowl. This guy use the same language (go back to Mexico) as the modern Trump white nationalist movement, but this is just an anecdote. The other thing I see in this anecdote is that the guy has a screw loose -- would say something so plainly offensive in a public place and publicly disavowed by his 10 children. Aside from being racist, the dude looks like he's on a path to self-destruction.

But of course these things have always been happening, even 4-5 years ago (like when they were calling our President and First Lady monkeys). There are statistics on these things and they have shown an uptick in hate crimes based on race, religion, and origin. I'd prefer to talk about the statistics and not argue from anecdote, and then try to magically draw connections between incidents and trends. I don't know that this guy is part of any xenophobic trend or he's been exactly this way for the last 30 years. But we don't need to single out one racist for public shaming to address the trends. And imo it's counter-productive to do so because it creates identitarian divides.

The president himself has used this very line (Go back to where you come from) directed at a congresswoman. The statistics support all of this, but the statistics don't talk about the tenor of language and that's a key step in this process.

People want to excuse racist language as just being politically incorrect. But the reason I put this thread up is because it's no coincidence that hate crimes are rising.

In isolation, you can argue the reason is a result of x,y,z. But minorities know the reason is because of the increase in hateful rhetoric. A president that uses hateful and violent rhetoric leads others to do the same, and that leads to violence.

History has proven this out. So I respectfully disagree with your disagreement of my disagreement with you.

"Both last fall and in 2017, Republicans’ opinions on this question were divided. Since September, the share of Republicans who say America risks losing its identity if it is too open has increased 13 percentage points, while the share who view the nation’s openness to others as essential has declined 10 points."

youre either ignorant or lying comrade.

he said an american born federal judge couldnt do his job properly because he was "mexican".

that is the definition of racism.

ok, so maybe youre not ignorant. youre just a liar.

here is a thread that you started where i gave multiple examples of trumps racist words and actions...

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php...-far-left-lunatic.296677/page-2#post-12250924

    1) saying that an american-born federal judge cant do their job properly b/c of their ethnicity is the definition of racism.
    2) calling mexican immigrants rapists and drug dealers is racist.
    3) saying neo-nazis who chant "jews will not replace us" are "very fine people"
    4) calling for death penalty for central park 5, even after they were exonerated
    5) calling for a ban of muslims entering the united states
    6) attacking a gold star mother and saying that she was not allowed to speak b/c she was muslim
    7) discriminatory housing practices in his properties.
    8) making a slur about native americans right to the face of a native american WWII vet.
    9) birtherism
    10) "We've just seen many, many crimes getting worse all the time, and as Maine knows — a major destination for Somali refugees — right, am I right?" - August 2016
    11) "the overwhelming amount of violent crime in our cities is committed by blacks and Hispanics,"
    12) falsely claimed that 81% of murders against whites are committed by blacks

Comments from the president are a whole other ball of wax. Absolutely, anecdotal evidence of the things he says are relevant to every American. He's a leader. He sets policy and he sets the tone and example with his behavior for others to emulate. There's little doubt in my mind that the racist rhetoric from Trump has largely driven the spike in racist behaviors we see reflected in the statistics.

But name and shame of private citizens who do bad things only deepens grievances and increases polarization.

No wonder dachuda86 is a Trump supporter, he treat facts just like Trump. He is a minority too if he is telling the truth.
